St. John’s Earns Second BIG EAST Victory, Defeats Butler, 6-1

The defending BIG EAST Champions secure its third consecutive triumph; improve to 12-2 on the year
INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 23, 2020) – The St. John's men's tennis team picked up its second-straight BIG EAST victory of the season and 12th win of the 2020 campaign on Sunday, bouncing Butler on the road, 6-1, at the Butler Tennis Bubble.
The Johnnies secured the first point of the morning with two doubles wins in the No. 1 and 3 contests. Aditya Vashistha and Charlie James started things off as they swept Butler's Drew Michael and Zach Trimpe on the No. 3 court, 6-0. St. John's claimed its second doubles triumph in the No. 1 match as Ignacio Garcia and Ognjen Trejgut knocked off Thomas Brennan and Olof Wiklund, 6-2.
The Red Storm would go on to claim five of the six singles bouts en route to a commanding 6-1 victory over the Bulldogs.
No. 57 Vashistha and Garcia earned the Johnnies' first two singles triumphs of the day, bouncing Thomas Brennan and Drew Michael in the No. 1 and 3 slots, 6-3, 6-4, and 6-3, 6-0, respectively.
Trejgut and James followed with a couple more straight-set victories in the No. 2 and 6 tilts. Trejgut earned his fourth singles win of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alvaro Huete Vadillo. James claimed his second victory on the No. 6 court, toppling Ryan Roegner 6-2, 6-4.
Djuro Opacic would need three sets in his match to seal the Johnnies' 6-1 triumph over Butler. In the No. 5 bout, the Belgrade, Serbia, native forced a third set after dropping the first set, 3-6. The senior would settle down and go on to clinch the final two sets for a 3-6, 6-3, 15-13 victory.
The Bulldogs avoided the sweep with a straight-set 6-4, 6-2 triumph by Filip Tensing over Udayan Bhakar on the No. 4 court.
St. John's will wrap up its seven-match road swing next weekend with a meeting against Penn at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m.
