St. John's Impresses at the Temple Fencing Invitational

The men’s fencing squad finished undefeated as a team and combined to win 86 individual matches
PHILADELPHIA (Feb. 23, 2020) - The St. John's men's and women's fencing teams returned to the piste on Sunday at the Temple Invitational, finishing with a combined record of 7-3. The men's program waltzed through five rounds of competition to finish the tournament undefeated. The women's fencing squad defeated fencers from Johns Hopkins, Penn, Penn State, Temple, and Princeton, finishing 2-3 as a collective unit.
Fifth-year senior Katarzyna Lachman and sophomore Arianna Pappone led the women's squad, securing a combined 28 victories in 30 bouts. Freshmen Jan Jurkiewicz, Maksym Kariuchenko, and Tariq Karam led Yury Gelman's squad as they each finished with 10 wins in their respective competitions.
The men's foil team led the way with 31 wins this afternoon and went 5-0 as a team. Three of the four men's foil specialists finished with winning records. Jurkiewicz, Vadim Bazulev, and Maxime Tarasiewicz picked up 27 of the 31 victories. Junior Malcolm Jackson finished the competition with four triumphs in nine attempts.
Karam, Dalton Walker, and Karol Lademann starred for the Johnnies in the men's saber competition, combining for 23 wins and finishing the competition with a 4-1 record. Kariuchenko, Ivan Zagoruiko, and Nathan Vaysberg excelled in the men's epee competition, finishing with a collective 23-10 record this afternoon. Senior epee specialist Shomari Moore was victorious in six of his 12 bouts.
For the women's squad, the foil team enjoyed a stellar day on the strip going 28-17 for the tournament. Lachman and Pappone combined for all 28 of the unit's triumphs and guided the Red Storm with a 4-1 team record in the invitational.
In women's epee, Junior Andrea Rizzi and freshman Nicole Gavrilko collectively claimed 17 of the team's 25 victories. Fifth-year fencer Dominique Tannous finished the invitational with three consecutive wins to finish 6-7 this afternoon.
Karolina Cieslar, the defending NCAA Champion in women's saber, and fellow senior Karolina Kaleta led the unit with nine of the team's 13 victories.
