St. John's Downs Butler, 85-80, in Overtime Thriller

Five Johnnies finish in double figures in Red Storm victory
In a thrilling overtime affair that featured 13 lead changes and 13 ties, the St. John's women's basketball team held on to complete the season sweep of Butler, 85-80, on Friday night at Carnesecca Arena.
With her team trailing by two, 68-66, and 22 ticks left on the clock, Alissa Alston made a drive to the basket to deadlock the score at 68 and send the two programs into overtime. The back-and-forth battle between the Red Storm and the Bulldogs carried over into the extra period, before the Johnnies used an 8-2 run over the final 36 seconds to cement the victory.
St. John's (17-11, 10-7 BIG EAST) saw five players finish in double figures for the third time this season. Alston led the way with 20 points on the night, knocking down 17 in the second half alone. The New Haven, Conn., native was dead accurate from the free-throw line, as she drained all 10 of her attempts to help lift the Red Storm to a victory over the Bulldogs.
Leilani Correa finished just shy of the 20-point mark, draining 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the floor. The rookie guard converted on four of her seven attempts from three-point range.
Qadashah Hoppie, who struggled to generate much offense in the first 20 minutes of action, went off for 16 points in the second half, sinking all six of her attempts from the free-throw line.
Alisha Kebbe and Kadaja Bailey rounded out the players in double-figures, registering 14 and 12 points, respectively. The guard duo also dominated on the glass, as Bailey led the team with eight boards, while Kebbe finished with seven.
Both programs went without a bucket for a little over a minute to start the game before Butler (19-9, 11-6 BIG EAST) snapped the scoring drought with a pull up jumper at the 8:49 mark. This began a 7-0 run for the Bulldogs. Emma Nolan put an end to the visiting team's early offensive surge, draining a shot from distance to put St. John's on the board.
The Bulldogs' defense continued to test the Johnnies, holding them without a point for over three minutes of action. St. John's caught a second wind down the stretch of the of the first frame, outscoring Butler, 9-5, to pull the game within five, 17-12, after 10 minutes of action.
Thirty-five seconds into the second stanza, Bailey knocked down a triple to trim the Johnnies' deficit down to three, 17-15. Butler responded with a free throw followed by a layup to grow its lead back up to three, 18-15.
Bailey continued to bring the heat for the Johnnies, draining back-to-back buckets in the paint. Alston then capped off the Johnnies 7-0 run with a shot from distance to give St. John's its first advantage of the game, 22-20.
The Red Storm's edge was short lived, as Butler took off on an 8-0 tear to regain the lead, 28-22. With 27 ticks remaining in the half, Correa converted on a three-pointer to pull the Johnnies back within three, 28-25, at the break.
Bailey led the way for the Red Storm at the intermission, netting 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor through the first 20 minutes of action.
Tiana England made a drive to the basket to open the third quarter and make it a one-point game, 28-27, in favor of the Bulldogs. The two programs traded blows over the next few minutes before the Johnnies used a 10-4 run to regain the lead, 40-37.
The back-and-forth battle continued down the stretch of the third period, with St. John's holding on to a three-point advantage, 45-42, after 30 minutes of action.
Free throw shooting defined the fourth quarter for both teams, as the Red Storm went 14-for-14 while the Bulldogs hit 11-of-13 in the fourth frame.
