49ers’ Josh Haney beats out double play ball that would have ended the ninth
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Feb. 29, 2020) – After St. John's erased a three-run deficit to tie the game in the top of the ninth, Charlotte's Josh Haney beat out a double-play ball to drive in the winning run and walk it off for the 49ers, 6-5, at Hayes Stadium.
St. John's trailed 5-2 heading into the top of the ninth before the Red Storm (3-5) plated three runs in the frame to extend the game. In the home half of the inning, Charlotte loaded the bases with one out before Haney hit a grounder to short. The Johnnies recorded the out at second, but Haney beat out the potential inning-ending throw at first, driving in the game-winning run and improving Charlotte to 7-4 on the season.
Three of the Johnnies' five hits on the afternoon went for extra bases. Justin Folz singled and launched his second homer of the year, a two-run shot in the top of the second. Jake Lazzaro and Ryan Hogan logged leadoff doubles while Mitchell Henshaw kicked off the ninth inning rally with an infield single.
Ethan Routzahn entered for the bottom of the ninth and was tagged with the loss, his first in two years with the Red Storm.
Joe Joe Rodriguez, the afternoon's starting pitcher, allowed four earned runs in 5.0 frames of work. The junior right-hander surrendered just four hits, struck out three and walked five on the afternoon.
Geoff Mosseau tossed 3.0 innings of scoreless relief, scattering a hit and four walks. The 6-foot-6 southpaw fanned three, lowering his ERA to 1.86 on the season.
After Charlotte needed just five pitches to retire St. John's in the first, the 49ers plated three runs in the home half of the inning to take an early lead for the second straight day.
The Red Storm responded in the top of the second, as Brandon Miller drew a one-out walk before Folz lifted a roundtripper over the right field wall, trimming the St. John's deficit to one, 3-2, with one and a half innings complete.
After Rodriguez set the 49ers down in order, the Johnnies threatened again in the third. Lazzaro laced a leadoff ground-rule double to left, but was stranded on third as Ryan Czanstkowski set down the next three St. John's batters in order.
After preventing St. John's from tying the contest, Charlotte bumped its lead to a pair, 4-2, with a solo shot off the bat of Craig Keuchel in the bottom of the third.
With two outs and a runner on first in the bottom of the fifth, Rafi Vazquez ripped an RBI double to left center, pushing the 49ers' advantage to three, 5-2, after five.
St. John's went down in order in the sixth and seventh before Hogan led off the top of the eighth with a two-bagger to center. Much like Lazzaro in the third, howeer, Hogan ended the inning 90 feet from home, as Patrick Szczypinski retired the next three Johnnies in order to end the inning.
With the Johnnies still behind by three after eight full innings, Sean McGeehan lined out to start the ninth before Henshaw singled, Miller walked and Folz singled to load the bases with one out. Colin Wetterau was then hit by a pitch to plate the inning's first run before Hogan lifted a sac fly to center, bringing the Red Storm within one, 5-4, with only one out remaining. With runners on first and second, Lazzaro walked to load the bases before Mike Antico took four straight balls, pulling the Johnnies even at five a side. With the go-ahead run 90 feet from home, Ryan Markey grounded out to third to end the inning.
The 49ers and the Red Storm will close out their series tomorrow afternoon at Hayes Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
