Beney will join the Johnnies in the fall of 2020
St. John's men's golf head coach Mal Galletta announced the signing of Douglas Beney, who will join the Johnnies in the fall of 2020.
"I am very excited to welcome Doug into our St. John's golf program," Coach Galletta said. "He is going to be a great addition to the team both on the course and in the classroom."
Beney hails from Geneva, Switzerland but moved to the U.S., at the age of eight before beginning his golf career at the age of 13. The newest member of the Red Storm golf team competes in the renowned American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) circuit, where he currently shoots an average of 71.8 per round.
Beney's most notable achievement of his young career came in 2019 as he was named Met PGA Junior Tour Player of the Year. During his 2019 run, Beney participated in six events, earning a total of 11,600 points, besting the runner up by nearly 2,000 points.
In his most recent year, Beney finished first in five of the six tournaments that he participated in. The Greenwich transplant shot a low-round 66 at both the New York City Championship and the Longshore CC to claim medalist honors. Beney's other first-place finishes came at the FS: Eisenhower Spring Challenge (71, 73) and the Tour Championship (69, 72). Beney turned in a score of 72 and 76 at the Future Series Eisenhower Fall Challenge to close out play in a tie for third.
In 2017, Beney earned honorable mention Westchester/Putnam recognition by the Journal News after winning three PGA Metro Section titles. That season, Beney posted nine top-10 finishes and was second in the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Major Championship at The Architects Golf Club in Lopatcong, N.J.
