Red Storm will head to Orlando for a five-game slate to open the season
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2020) – The defending 2019 BIG EAST regular season champions St. John's will open its 40th campaign in program history at the UCF Black & Gold Tournament beginning on Friday, Feb. 7.
The Johnnies will kick off their 53-game slate on Friday morning against Clemson, the newest member of Division I Softball, at 10:00 a.m. Following its matchup with the Tigers, the Red Storm will play two games on Saturday, taking on Big Ten foe Indiana at 9:00 a.m. before facing Duke at 1:30 p.m. St. John's will then close out its opening weekend on Sunday, squaring off with Clemson at 9:00 a.m. before concluding with the host-Golden Knights at 1:30 p.m.
The Red Storm will look to reach the BIG EAST Tournament for the seventh-straight year after making the postseason with a conference's top record of 14-4 and featured the team's third regular season crown in the last five years.
With her third-straight First Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2019, Gretchen Bowie became the first Johnnie in the program's 39-year history to secure a spot on the league's top squad in three consecutive seasons. The Sparta, N.J., native is on pace to break four program records (runs, RBIs, home runs, and triples) on top of the possibility of becoming the only player to capture four selections to the conference's top team.
Along with Bowie, Marissa Rizzi, Laura Delgado and Kaitlin Mattera will look to improve upon their successful junior season in 2019 while serving as the team's captains through the 2020 campaign.
Rizzi muscled through her third campaign in red by leading all Johnnies with a 12 homers while batting .403. Delgado garnered her first career selection to the conference's top team after her best season that included three game-winning hits and .341 batting average in 36 appearances. Mattera posted a stellar season behind the plate, catching nine runners stealing and posting a .989 fielding percentage on her way to the league's second team.
St. John's loses a pair of seniors from the 2019 campaign in reigning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year Madison Morris and First Team ALL-BIG EAST selection Christina Melendez. However, the Red Storm gained four newcomers in Erin Brown, Mia Faieta Natalie Alheidt and Amy Mallah.
Brown brings a trio Tri-Valley Pitcher of the Year awards along with four-straight selections to the league's top team to Queens. Fellow hurler Faieta made national headlines with her 21-strikeout perfect game in her sophomore season.
Alheidt, a New Jersey native, set the Vernon High School home run record, drilling 16 dingers over the outfield wall. Mallah enjoyed a slew of championships with East Meadow High School on Long Island, racking up three Long Island titles along with an All-State Second Team selection.
Clemson enters the 2020 season as the newest member of Division I Softball after announcing its arrival in 2017. The Red Storm and the Tigers will square off in Clemson's first game in program history. The Tigers are led by longtime head coach and member of the USA Softball Women's National Team coaching pool, John Rittman, who boasts a career record of 750-351-3 over his illustrious career.
For the second-straight season, the Johnnies will square off against Head Coach Shonda Stanton and the Indiana Hoosiers during opening weekend. Indiana kicked off the 2019 slate with its best start in program history at 14-0, including a win over the Red Storm. The Hoosiers ranked fifth in the nation last season in stolen bases per game with 2.47.
Duke enters its third season following a 2019 campaign that ended with a 25-31 record. However, the Blue Devils return all of its starters from a season ago, including Deja Davis. The sophomore paced Duke's lineup in her first season, batting .324 with 61 hits and 31 runs scored.
The Golden Knights will look to improve upon their 34-21 record after an early exit from the AAC Tournament in 2019. St. John's will try to topple the host school after falling to UCF, 6-0, at the USF Series last year.
