Jessi Bryant records first hit, RBI and multi-hit game since 2018
ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 7, 2020) – The St. John's softball team fell in its season opener to Clemson, 6-2, at the UCF Softball Complex on Friday morning.
Jessi Bryant led all Johnnies with a 2-for-3 performance at the dish while knocking in a run. The Emmitsburg, Md., native registered her first hit, RBI and multi-hit showing since April 14, 2018, against Seton Hall after missing the entire 2019 season due to injury.
Elyse Morris opened the game with a leadoff walk, reaching base for the first time since May 11, 2018, against Creighton after also being out for all of 2019. Following another base on balls to Kaitlin Mattera and a wild pitch to move Morris to third, St. John's (0-1) jumped out to early 1-0 lead after Mattera lured a throw down to second on a steal, setting Morris in motion to score.
Clemson (1-0) registered its first run of the game on an RBI single to left field, knotting the game at one through two innings.
Bryant registered the team's first base hit of the season in the fourth inning, smacking a single to left field.
In the bottom of the fifth frame, Clemson's Hannah Goodwin hit a three-run homer to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead after five frames. The Tigers added two more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to five, 6-1.
Despite the home run, Erin Brown threw 5.0 innings in her first career start, surrendering just three additional hits and striking out two batters.
The Johnnies tacked on one more tally, 6-2, in the final frame on an RBI infield single by Kalei Sorensen following base hits from Mattera and Bryant.
St. John's returns to action on Saturday, taking on Big Ten foe Indiana at 9:00 a.m. and ACC rival Duke at 1:30 p.m.
