St. John’s Drops Two Games at Black & Gold Tournament

The Johnnies scored a combined three runs over two games
ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 8, 2020) – The St. John's softball team dropped two games on Saturday, losing to both Indiana and Duke at the UCF Softball Complex.
Game 1
St. John's (0-3) suffered a 10-2 loss in five innings to the Hoosiers in the opening game of day two at UCF's Black & Gold Tournament
Senior Kaitlin Mattera led the Red Storm with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate, knocking in the Johnnies' only two runs.
Gabriella Conca recorded the team's first hit of the game in the third inning, sending a single back up the middle. Jessi Bryant and Kalei Sorensen also recorded base knocks against Indiana (2-3).
The Red Storm trailed 1-0 following the opening frame before surrendering a combined eight unanswered runs in the second and third innings to be down 9-0 after three frames.
After a leadoff single from Sorensen and a walk to Elyse Morris, Mattera stepped up to the plate with two outs and pushed Indiana's Josie Wood to a full count. With the senior catcher down to her final strike, Mattera roped a single to the left-center gap, knocking in Morris and Sorensen to cut the team's deficit to seven, 9-2.
Indiana knocked in the one more run in the fifth to end the game with a final score of 10-2.
Game 2
The Johnnies' dropped its third-straight game with the team's 3-1 loss to Duke.
Gretchen Bowie provided the offensive spurt for the Johnnies, smacking her first home run of the season to give the Red Storm its lone run of the afternoon.
The Blue Devils (3-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Kristina Foreman solo shot over the left field fence in the second frame.
In the following inning, Duke's Deja Davis extended the lead in the third on a solo home run of her own to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage.
After a scoreless fourth frame, Duke added one more run on a single to left, extending its lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bowie launched a home run to straight-away center field, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1. Amelia Ditolvo singled in the following at-bat but St. John's was held off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.
The Red Storm returns to action Sunday as the team faces Clemson at 9:00 a.m., and UCF in the final contest of the Black & Gold Tournament at 1:30 p.m.
