Katarzyna Lachman Earns Gold Medal at NCAA Northeast Regional

Nine Red Storm fencers earn automatic bids to the 2020 NCAA Fencing Championships
ITHACA, N.Y. (March 8, 2020) – After nine long hours of competitive fencing, the St. John's fencing team claimed one gold medal and captured four top-three finishes at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Sunday afternoon at Cornell. Katarzyna Lachman shined on the piste to bring home her first NCAA Regional gold medal in the women's foil tournament.
After a second-place finish in the women's foil competition, Lachman, the No. 1 foilist heading into the weekend, finished the finals pool with a perfect 11-0 record to claim the gold. The fifth-year fencer will be joined at nationals by sophomore Arianna Pappone, as the Italian finished with an impressive third-place finish.
In women's epee, Andrea Rizzi finished in second place for the second year in a row, capturing 20 total victories. First-year fencer Nicole Gavrilko also earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships after placing third in the competition. Dominique Tannous and Melanie Dolgonos ranked 16th and 27thh, respectively, in the women's epee tournament.
Three-time defending champion Karolina Cieslar went 8-4 in pool play to advance to the final 12. Cieslar was unable to earn the gold for a fourth-straight season as she finished with a 14-9 mark, good enough for fifth place. Karolina Kaleta fell just short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in her final season, ending the tournament in 14th place.
In men's epee, Shomari Moore clinched his first-ever automatic bid into nationals, ending the day in seventh place with a 13–10 record. Nathan Vaysberg finished in ninth place, one spot short of qualifying for his second consecutive NCAA Championships. Ivan Zagoruiko missed out on qualifying behind stellar performances from Moore and Vaysberg. Freshman Maksym Kariuchenko finished his first NCAA Regionals in 23rd place.
In men's foil, freshman Jan Jurkiewicz and sophomore Maxime Tarasiewicz finished in 13th place, in his first-ever NCAA Regionals. Malcolm Jackson ended the tournament in 32nd place.
Junior Sal Centanni secured his first automatic bid into the NCAA Championships with a seventh-place mark, claiming 11 wins in the men's saber tournament. Senior Dalton Walker was incapable of finishing in the top-eight, ending the competition with a 17th place finish. Freshman Karol Lademann and Tariq Karam fared well in their first-ever NCAA Regionals, capping the event in 15th and 18th place respectively.
Nine different Johnnies clinched spots into the NCAA Championships, while the others will be put into an at-large selection and will be chosen on Tuesday.
The maximum number of student-athletes a school can qualify for the NCAA Fencing Championships is 12 (two for each weapon). On Tuesday, March 10, the NCAA will finalize a list of qualifiers for the NCAA Fencing Championship competition. Qualification is based on results from both the regular season and the regional performances. The NCAA Fencing Championships will be held in Detroit, Mich., from March 19-22, 2020.
