Anderson won the 400 meters while the 4x400-meter relay team also took first place
BOSTON, Mass. (March 8, 2020) – The St. John's track & field team took home two gold medals at the 2020 ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championships, held at the BU Track & Tennis Center, on Sunday.
Leah Anderson was named the 400-meter dash champion after taking first place in the finals with a time of 53.69. The junior sprinter earned a gold medal in the event for the second straight week since registering a first-place finish at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on March 2.
The Red Storm closed out its indoor season with Anderson, Avon Samuels, Brianna Burkley and Skyy Diop capturing first place in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:37.72. The mark was just 0.16 seconds shy of breaking the program record of 3:37.56 that was set in 1998. Anderson had the fastest split on the team with a time of 52.77 as Samuels ran her leg in 54.60. This marks the squad's fifth consecutive week taking first place in the event.
"We had a mostly young team compete this weekend," Assistant Coach Aliann Pompey said. "We'll be returning everyone but [Chantai Smith] and [Destiny Davis], but they all competed like pros this weekend. I was proud to see the relay team attempt to break the school record and come so close. Every single person needed to run faster than they ever had in their lives, and that's what they did. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish this outdoor season."
Senior thrower Amarys Berry finished the shot put in seventh place with a distance of 14.12 meters while Najeaya Singleton followed her teammate in eighth with a mark of 14.08 meters. Samantha Morillo rounded out St. John's throwers, recording a distance of 13.78 meters to take tenth place.
The Johnnies return to action when the outdoor season falls underway on March 21 at the Penn Invite in Philadelphia, Pa.
