Fapou Semebene and Rayven Peeples will join the Johnnies from Northwest Florida State
Coming off his seventh winning season at the helm of the St. John's Women's Basketball program, Head Coach Joe Tartamella announced the signing of two junior college standouts on Thursday.
Â
Fapou Semebene, a sophomore from Los Angeles and Rayven Peeples, another sophomore out of Detroit have signed National Letters of Intent to suit up for the Red Storm in 2020-21.
Â
Semebene and Peeples both come to Queens following a year at Northwest Florida. The dynamic duo of Semebene and Peeples led their squad to 27 wins, including an overtime victory against Gulf Coast State to claim the 2020 FCSAA/Region VIII Women's Tournament Title. The championship was the first for Northwest Florida since 1996 and the team's fourth overall. With the win over Gulf Coast State, the Raiders snapped a streak of four-consecutive championships by the Commodores.
Â
Peeples, a NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention, played one season at North Carolina A&T before transferring to Northwest Florida. This past season, Peeples led her team in scoring with 14.0 points per game. The Detroit native shot 64.2 percent from the field, the fourth-best mark in the country. Peeples was named to the FCSAA/Region VIII All-Tournament Team, while also being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She garnered FCSAA/Region VIII All-State and All-Panhandle Conference Honors as well.
Â
Peeples finished in double figures in 24 of the 31 games she played in over the 2019-20 campaign, eclipsing the 20-point mark on five different occasions. Peeples' top performance came on February 15 against Tallahassee Community College as she netted a season-high 28 points, lifting the Raiders to their second consecutive Panhandle Conference regular-season title. In addition to her scoring ability, Peeples averaged 7.0 rebounds per game over the season.
Â
Semebene transferred to Northwest Florida after spending one year at the University of Washington. With the Raiders, Semebene was named to the NJCAA All Panhandle Conference First Team, pulling down a team-high 9.2 rebounds per game, to rank sixth overall in the conference. The 6-foot forward grabbed 10 or more boards 15 times during the 2019-20 slate, pulling down a season-best 22 against Tyler Junior College on November 8.
Â
In addition to her rebounding ability, the West Coast native proved to be a sharp shooter for the Raiders, averaging 10.4 points per contest on 48.1 percent shooting from the floor.
