QUEENS, N.Y. (April 30, 2020) – The United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) has announced the 2020 NCAA Fencing All-American teams and All-Region teams.
Â
The St. John's fencing program, led by Head Coach Yury Gelman, is represented by 11 fencers on the USFCA All-American and All-Region lists.
Â
Each year, the USFCA recognizes the accomplishments of the fencing student-athletes by naming the All-Americans based on their achievements in the national championship, however, this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the championships were canceled.
Â
All-American honors were based on each fencer's overall body of work through the season competitions and NCAA Regionals.
Â
The Red Storm earned three first team All-America selections in Ivan Zagoruiko, Andrea Rizzi, and Katarzyna Lachman, four second team honorees in Nathan Vaysberg, Jan Jurkiewicz, Nicole Gavrilko, and Arianna Pappone, and three honorable mentions in Maxime Tarasiewicz, Sal Centanni, and Karolina Cieslar. All 10 of the All-American selections qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championships.
Â
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the USFCA has decided to create new postseason recognition awards to honor fencing student-athletes for their performances at NCAA Regionals this season.
Â
At the Northeast Regionals, 10 St. John's fencers placed within the top 10 of their respective weapons.
Â
Shomari Moore, Gavrilko, Rizzi, and Lachman were named first team All-Northeast Region while Zagoruiko, Jurkiewicz, Tarasiewicz, Centanni, and Cieslar were tabbed second team honorees. Vaysberg was named an All-Northeast Region honorable mention after placing in 9th in the men's epee competition.
