St. John’s Drops Close Contest with No. 19 UCLA

Patterson records first career double-double in St. John’s setback
Taking on No. 19 UCLA on Sunday afternoon at Hertz Arena in Estero, Fla., the St. John's women's basketball team fell short, 73-65, to the nationally ranked Bruins.
For the third time this season, Leilani Correa led the way for the Red Storm offensively, pouring in 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the floor. Correa also dished out three assists and grabbed two steals on the afternoon.
Danielle Patterson finished in double figures for the third-straight game, recording 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. The Brooklyn native also pulled down 10 boards for the first double-double of her collegiate career.
Camree Clegg led St. John's in assists, dishing out four helpers on the afternoon. The Westland, Mich., product also chipped in seven points.
Danielle Cosgrove and Kadaja Bailey each added nine points and three rebounds on the afternoon for the Johnnies.
The Johnnies and Bruins went back-and-forth in the early going of the contest before UCLA rattled off eight unanswered points to take a nine-point lead, 17-8. The two teams traded buckets over the final two-and-a-half minutes with UCLA leading, 21-14, after the first quarter.
Clegg drained an early triple to open the second stanza and put the Johnnies back within four, 21-17. The Bruins responded with another 8-0 run to grow their advantage to double digits, 29-17. The Johnnies quickly put a stop to UCLA's offensive surge, piecing together a 12-4 run to and make it a one-possession game, 35-32. The Bruins fired off four quick points over the final 1:10 to lead, 39-32, at the break.
Correa, the Preseason All-BIG EAST selection, led the way for St. John's at the half with 10 points on a 4-of-7 shooting from the floor.
UCLA grew its lead to as many as eight, 42-32, early in the third quarter before St. John's unleashed eight unanswered points. Patterson capped off the Red Storm's run with a fast break layup to knot the score at 42-42. The two teams continued the tightly contested battle down the stretch with the Bruins taking back the lead, 56-53, after 30 minutes of play.
The Red Storm would tie the game twice over the first half of the final frame before UCLA went on a 10-2 run to win the game.
St. John's will return to action on Dec. 5, as the Johnnies kick off conference play against Seton Hall at Carnesecca Arena.
