Bailey and Correa finish with over 20 points each
The St. John's women's basketball team remained undefeated at home on Sunday afternoon, producing its second-highest scoring output of the season with an 88-75 win over Seton Hall to kick off BIG EAST play.
Through eight games this season, the Red Storm (4-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) has reached the 80-point mark in three of those contests.
St. John's leading scorer, Leilani Correa paced the squad with 24 points, nine rebounds and three assists in 40 minutes of action. The Manchester, N.J., native converted on nine of her 15 attempts from the floor and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Correa has finished in double figures in all seven games that she has played in this season, eclipsing the 20-point plateau a trio of times.
Senior guard Kadaja Bailey poured in 23 points on the afternoon, converting on all seven of her attempts from the floor. The Long Beach, N.Y., native also pulled down four rebounds and dished out three assists in the Johnnies' win.
Danielle Patterson registered her second double-double in as many games. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native registered 16 points and team-high 10 rebounds against the Pirates.
Holbrook, N.Y., native Danielle Cosgrove rounded out the Johnnies who finished with double-digit scoring, chipping in 15 points on a 6-of-12 shooting from the floor. Cosgrove also pulled down five boards.
The Johnnies and the Pirates traded blows in the early going of the contest with St. John's leading the way, 11-9, at the first media timeout. The tradeoff continued over the next few minutes, and with the score knotted at 12, St. John's unleashed an 11-2 run to take a 22-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Red Storm extended its lead to double digits in the opening seconds of the second stanza, as Correa made a drive to the glass. The Pirates managed to cut their deficit down to four, 36-32, with under five minutes to play in the half. That was as close as Seton Hall would get as St. John's took an eight-point advantage, 48-40, into the break.
Coming out of the locker room, the Johnnies continued to control the momentum over the third quarter, growing their lead back up to double-digits, 66-55, entering the final frame.
The Red Storm dominated the early going of the fourth quarter, ballooning its lead to 16 on two different occasions, for its largest lead of the afternoon. The Pirates continued to battle down the stretch but were no match for the Red Storm squad, as the Johnnies came away victorious.
St. John's will return to action on Dec. 11, as the Johnnies welcome La Salle to Carnesecca Arena for a 1 p.m. meeting.
