St. John’s Tops Adelphi, 93-58, in Exhibition Matchup

Leilani Correa leads the Red Storm with 22 points
The St. John's women's basketball team cruised past Adelphi, 93-58, in an exhibition contest at Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday night.
Five Johnnies finished in double figures while the team shot 47 percent from the field. The Red Storm dominated in the paint, converting on 73 percent of its attempts inside to outscore Adelphi, 68-10.
St. John's won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Panthers, 50-42. The Red Storm was suffocating on defense, forcing 27 turnovers while holding the Panthers to a 31 percent shooting from the floor.
Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Leilani Correa led the way for St. John's in the scoring department, draining 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor. The Manchester, N.J., native also poured in six rebounds and grabbed three steals in 22 minutes of action.
Senior forward Rayven Peeples tallied a double-double, racking up 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Detroit native went 6-of-8 from the floor, knocking down five of her six attempts from the charity stripe.
Kadaja Bailey, Danielle Patterson and Camree Clegg also scored double figures in the final tune-up before regular season play. Bailey turned in 13 points, while Patterson and Clegg each scored 10.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the early stages with Adelphi taking a 7-2 lead on a Rolanda Robinson three-pointer. The Panthers' lead was short lived, as the Red Storm responded with a 10-0 run to end the first quarter with a double-digit edge, 24-12.
From there, the Red Storm's advantage kept expanding. Seven different players scored in a dominant second period in which St. John's ballooned its lead to 26 at the intermission, 46-20.
St. John's continued to ride that momentum into the final 20 minutes of action. The Johnnies utilized a balanced scoring effort over the last two quarters to dominate the Panthers by 35 points, 93-58.
St. John's will open the regular season on November 10, when it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson at 7 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena.
