Peeples finishes with a career-high 24 points
Behind a career-high 24 points from Rayven Peeples, the St. John's women's basketball team rolled past Fairleigh Dickinson, 89-68, in its home opener on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena.
Peeples, who led the team in field goal percentage a season ago, converted on 10 of her 16 attempts from the floor. The Detroit, Mich., native also tied teammate Danielle Patterson with a game-high seven rebounds on the evening.
Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Leilani Correa also eclipsed the 20-point plateau, pouring in 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor, including a 3-of-5 mark from three-point range. The Manchester, N.J., native has now finished with 20 or more points in six of her last 12 games dating back to last season.
Senior guard Kadaja Bailey stuffed the stat sheet for the Johnnies. The Long Beach, N.Y., native finished with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor. Bailey also pulled down five rebounds and four assists on the night.
Patterson and Danielle Cosgrove both debuted for the Johnnies tonight, pulling down seven and five rebounds, respectively.
As a team, the Johnnies' 89 points were the most for the squad since they drained 96 against Army on Dec. 9, 2019.
St. John's wasted no time getting the scoring underway, as Correa finished at the rim on the opening drive to give the home team an early edge. The two programs traded blows over the next few minutes, and with FDU leading, 8-6, the Johnnies unleashed a 13-0 run to take a double-digit advantage, 19-8. The Knights crept back within six over the final minutes before Emma Nolan converted on layup to end the quarter to put St. John's ahead, 21-13, after 10 minutes.
Carrying over its offensive momentum from the first period, the Johnnies opened up the second quarter on an 8-2 run, building their advantage back up to double digits, 29-15. St. John's continued to storm the court over the next four minutes, growing its lead to as many as 18 points, 45-23, off a Cosgrove triple.
At the half, the Red Storm led, 49-37. Peeples paced the way at the intermission with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. Bailey entered the break with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Knights converted on back-to-back buckets to open up the third quarter, cutting the Johnnies' lead down to eight, 49-41. The Red Storm squad answered back, unleashing a 20-7 run over the remainder of the period to balloon its advantage to 21, 66-46, after three periods. Correa accounted for 13 points alone in the third quarter, knocking down a pair of beyond-the-arc attempts.
The Red Storm put the game to bed over the final 10 minutes, combining for 20 points to lock in the season-opening victory.
St. John's returns to action on Nov. 14, as the Johnnies kick off a two-game road swing at Stony Brook on Sunday at 2 p.m.
