The Johnnies and Hoyas will showdown Sunday at 1:30 p.m. on FS1
Following a 1-0 victory over top-seeded Xavier on Thursday night, the St. John's women's soccer team will take on the number two-seeded Georgetown Hoyas on Sunday afternoon in the BIG EAST title game.
The two teams are slated to kick off at 1:30 p.m. from Corcoran Field in Cincinnati. The contest between the Johnnies (12-5-2, 6-3-1) and the Hoyas (12-1-6, 7-1-2) will be aired on FS1.
With the win over Xavier on Thursday, the Red Storm earned its second-ever berth to the BIG EAST finals, and the program's first since 1994. That season, the Johnnies defeated Boston College in the title game to hoist the conference trophy.
St. John's readies to face the Hoyas on the heels of six straight wins. If the Johnnies prevail against Georgetown on Sunday, they will tie for the program's longest winning streak with seven consecutive victories, set by the 2015 squad.
In Thursday's semifinal matchup with Xavier, BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Zsani Kajan broke the scoreless deadlock, converting on the game-winning goal in the 61st minute. The goal marked Kajan's 17th of the season and the 45th of her Red Storm career. With the tally, Kajan increased her overall point total to 100. The Budapest, Hungary, native is just the second player in program history to record 100 points for her career, joining the Johnnies' all-time leading scorer Rachel Daly (111 points). Sophomore forward Ava Collins picked up an assist on Kajan's score for her third helper of the season.
Naya Lipkens was outstanding in goal for the Red Storm, as the redshirt junior recorded her ninth solo shutout of the season. The Bloomfield, Conn., native turned aside five of Xavier's attempts on goal for a combined 76 stops on the season. Lipkens enters Sunday's contest boasting a 0.87 goals against average and a 0.819 save percentage.
Georgetown enters the conference final with record of 12-1-6. The Hoyas scored two second-half goals against Butler on Thursday to punch their ticket to the BIG EAST title game for the sixth straight year and eighth time overall.
Eliza Turner and Kaitlyn Parcell scored their first goals in a Georgetown uniform, coming in the 60th and 66th minutes, respectively. Georgetown outshot Butler, 14-7, and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Hoyas' goalkeeper Allie Augur made one save to earn the win.
Offensively, the Hoyas are led this season by All-BIG EAST First Team selection Gia Vicari, who has recorded nine goals and seven assists for a team-high 25 points. Augur, a second team all-conference honoree, has started every game between the pipes for Georgetown this year, posting a 0.44 goals against average and a 0.842 save percentage.
The winner of Sunday's BIG EAST Championship receives the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
