St. John’s to face four teams ranked inside the top-14 of last year’s final USILA poll
QUEENS, N.Y.- St. John's lacrosse Head Coach Jason Miller has announced the program's 14-game schedule for the upcoming spring season.
Â
The Red Storm's slate features four opponents ranked in the top-14 of the final United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's poll in Georgetown, Denver, Rutgers and Villanova.Â
Â
The season will begin with a pair of exhibition games, as St. John's will host NJIT on Jan. 29 before venture to Cambridge, Mass. to face Harvard on Feb. 5.
Â
For the sixth time in the last seven years the Johnnies will begin the regular season against Rutgers on Feb. 12 at 1 p.m.in Queens. The Scarlet Knights, who are set to return five USILA All-Americans, are coming off a 9-4 record in 2021 that saw the program's first NCAA Tournament victory since 1990.
Â
The first road trip of the 2022 campaign is to Bucknell on Feb. 19. The last time these two teams met it marked the inaugural game of the Jason Miller Era on Feb. 17, 2007. Now entering his 16th year at the helm, Miller will lead the Red Storm against its first Patriot League opponent since 2015.Â
Â
Upon return to the Empire State, the team will compete in the first-ever tournament between local foes St. John's, Stony Brook, Hofstra and LIU at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead. The Red Storm will meet the Seawolves for the 15th time in program history under the lights on Friday, Feb. 25 at 6:00 p.m. On Sunday, dependent on Friday's results, the Johnnies will meet either LIU or Hofstra. St. John's outlasted the Pride, 19-18, in an overtime thriller in 2021 and bested the Sharks, 17-15, the previous year.Â
Â
Next up is a two-game home stand against MAAC opponents scheduled for March 5 and 12.Â
Manhattan will make the trip from the Bronx for the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The following weekend, the Johnnies will then host Siena, against whom they carry a 21-4 all-time series lead into the matchup. Â
Â
The non-conference slate will close with three contests away from home at Dartmouth on March 19, at Fairfield on March 22 and the program's second-ever trip to the Sunshine State to meet Jacksonville on March 26.
Â
The Red Storm will open conference play with back-to-back home games. Fresh off an appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament, Villanova is set to come to Queens on April 2. The Wildcats welcome back senior Matt Campbell, who poured in a team-high 32 goals during a 7-5 campaign.
Â
Marquette is scheduled to pay a visit to Queens on the afternoon of April 9. Both of the Red Storm's contest against the Golden Eagles last year were decided by a single goal, as the Red Storm fell in overtime, 9-8, in Milwaukee before dropping a 15-14 decision in the regular season finale at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Â
The Johnnies will then make an Easter weekend journey to Denver to face the 2015 National Champions on April 16. The Pioneers have qualified for ten of the last 11 NCAA Tournament fields, making their return in 2021. A week later on, another national powerhouse awaits on April 23, as the Johnnies will face the reigning three-time BIG EAST champions Georgetown in the nation's capital. Â
Â
St. John's will host its Senior Day in conjunction with the regular season finale against Providence on April 30.Â
Â
The top four teams in the conference will battle for the 2022 BIG EAST Championship at Cooper Field on the campus of Georgetown on May 5-7.Â
