Correa tied her career-high with 35 points
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's basketball team fell to DePaul, 107-93, on Sunday afternoon in Carnesecca Arena.
Leilani Correa led the Red Storm in the scoring department as she tied her career-high of 35 points on 13-of-19 shooting. This marks the fifth time the junior guard has reached the 20-point plateau and the first time she has scored 30 or more this season. Correa also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and dished out three assists.
Junior guard Unique Drake continued her impressive scoring run by netting 16 points while shooting 50% from the floor. This marks the third consecutive game the Columbia, S.C., native has scored in double figures.
Danielle Cosgrove scored 13 points for the second straight contest. The senior forward converted on five of her 11 attempts and knocked down two triples. Camree Clegg led the team in assists with five and chipped in nine points.
The Red Storm and Blue Demons traded baskets during a fast-paced opening period. The two teams were deadlocked at 12 going into the first media timeout, and they would continue to race up and down the floor as the Johnnies held a three-point lead, 26-23, after the initial 10 minutes. Correa paced St. John's with eight points after one quarter.
The second quarter remained a back-and-forth affair with no team leading by more than seven points. Correa chipped in nine more points to bring her total at the halftime break to 17. The Red Storm headed to the locker room with a slim lead, 54-52, over the Blue Demons. 54 points marks the highest halftime total for St. John's this season. The Red Storm converted on 53 percent of its attempts during the opening stanza.
DePaul responded in the third quarter and took a five-point lead, 72-67, at the media timeout. The Blue Demons scored on three consecutive possessions, two Morrow layups and a three-pointer Darrione Rogers to earn the two-possession advantage. St. John's continued to find offense from a variety of sources to keep the Blue Demons' lead at five, 82-77, heading to the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, an 8-0 run propelled the Blue Demons to a 14-point lead, 95-81, that forced the Red Storm to call a timeout. A Clegg three-pointer and a Drake fast-break layup cut the DePaul lead to nine, 97-88, with less than five minutes to play. That was as close as the Red Storm would get as DePaul took control down the stretch and closed out the Johnnies, 107-93.
St. John's will take an extended break before it returns to action with a road tilt against Georgetown on Dec. 31. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
