St. John’s senior will take part in the shot put in Cali, Colombia
QUEENS, N.Y.- Samantha Morillo will travel to Cali, Colombia to compete against some of the world's best at the inaugural Junior Pan American Games. The senior throws specialist will participate in the shot put event, which is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 3.
Morillo will be representing her home country of the Dominican Republic as she looks to reach the podium in Colombia. Friday will mark the first time Morillo has competed in the shot put since placing fourth at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in May. The Valhalla, N.Y., native currently ranks ninth on the St. John's all-time list in the shot put with a throw of 14.30 meters back in 2020.
"It feels amazing to be representing my beloved country, Dominican Republic," said Morillo. "I know the moment I walk in that track and field arena with Dominican Republic across my chest, it is going feel so surreal. To be competing among all these young great athletes on this big stage is incredible. We are all champions to have this opportunity."
This marks the first time a member, current or former, of the Red Storm has competed on the international stage since Maya Stephens ran as a part of the Canadian 4x400 relay team in the 2019 IAAF World Championships.
