Red Storm and Jayhawks play first-ever game at New York’s newest venue
QUEENS, N.Y. – Julian Champagnie scored 20 of his 24 points after halftime on Friday night at UBS Arena, but it was not enough to overcome No. 8/7 Kansas, as St. John's fell to the Jayhawks, 95-75.
Champagnie made his first five 3-point attempts of the second half, helping the Red Storm shave a 13-point halftime deficit to just three with 11 minutes to go. From there, St. John's went without a field goal for the next 7:55 as Kansas rattled off a 22-3 run. Champagnie, who also grabbed eight boards, ended the burst with his sixth 3-pointer of the game, matching a career-high in that category.
Dylan Addae-Wusu scored a career-high 16 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. The sophomore from the Bronx also went 6-for-7 from the charity stripe and added four assists.
Posh Alexander also netted 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and chipped in three assists.
Four Jayhawks finished in double figures, led by 31 points from Christian Braun. Ochai Agbaji added 23 points while David McCormack tallied a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double. Arizona State transfer Remy Martin posted 12 points and a game-high five assists.
After scoring the game's opening bucket on a Joel Soriano hook shot, the Johnnies saw Kansas rattle off a quick 13-0 run. Soriano's basket was the only make for the Red Storm in its first seven tries. Kansas, on the other hand, started 5-for-7.
Trailing 30-18 with eight minutes to go, St. John's rattled off a 7-0 run to pull within five just over a minute later. Alexander tallied five of the Red Storm's points on the 7-0 spurt.
Kansas answered with a 7-0 burst of its own to push the lead back to 12 before taking a 43-30 lead into the locker room.
Out of the intermission, St. John's scored five quick points and cut the lead to eight, forcing a Kansas timeout just 41 seconds into the stanza.
St. John's continued to chip away at the Kansas lead over the next few minutes, climbing within three, 62-59, on Champagnie's fifth triple of the half with 11:07 to play.
Down 64-61 after a pair of Champagnie free throws 30 seconds later, St. John's saw Kansas score 11 unanswered to kick-start a decisive 22-3 run.
St. John's will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts local foe Fordham at Carnesecca Arena. Tip-off for the 89th meeting all-time between the Red Storm and Rams is set for 7 p.m. on FS1.
