The Johnnies and the Huskies will tip off at 6 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena
Coming off a double-digit victory at Butler on Saturday, the St. John's women's basketball team will look to continue its winning ways on Wednesday when it welcomes No. 1/1 Connecticut to Carnesecca Arena.
Tip-off from Queens is scheduled for 6 p.m. on SNY with Meghan Culmo and Allen Bestwick on the call.
St. John's (6-11, 3-9 BIG EAST) enters its matchup with the Huskies (16-1, 13-0 BIG EAST) following its best defensive effort of the season, as the Red Storm defeated Butler, 47-35, on Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Kadaja Bailey, who leads the Johnnies in both rebounds and assists this season, notched her third double-double of the year against the Bulldogs. The Long Beach, N.Y., native chipped in 12 points, while tying Leilani Correa with a team-high 10 rebounds. Bailey has been a bright spot for the Red Storm as of late, averaging 13.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game over the Johnnies' last five outings.
Sophomore guard Unique Drake led the Johnnies in scoring against Butler on Saturday, finishing with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor. Correa, who leads the Red Storm and ranks third in the conference in scoring this season with 20.9 points per game, finished with nine points and 10 rebounds at Butler.
Over the Red Storm's last two games, Correa has averaged 21.0 points per game, including a game-high 33 points against then-No. 22/22 DePaul last Wednesday. With 33 points against the Blue Demons, Correa became the first player in program history to string together three-straight 30-point performances. The Manchester, N.J., native has reached the 30-point plateau a BIG EAST-leading five times this season. She is one of just six players across the NCAA to eclipse the 30-point mark at least five times this year.
In their first meeting on Feb. 3 at Gampel Pavilion, the Huskies came away with a 94-62 victory over the Johnnies behind a 32-point performance from freshman Paige Bueckers, who shot 13-of-20 from the field. Correa led the way for the Red Storm, as the sophomore guard went off for a game-high 33 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the floor against the nationally ranked Huskies.
Bueckers, the BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year, leads the Huskies and ranks second in the league in scoring averaging 21.1 points per game. The rookie guard also leads the league in assists, dishing out 5.7 dimes per game.
Should the Red Storm prevail against UConn, it would be the program's first win over a Top-10 opponent since the 2018-19 season, when the Johnnies bested then-No. 8/7 Marquette, 81-74, at Carnesecca Arena.
After taking on UConn, St. John's will continue its three-game homestand on Feb. 21, as the Johnnies welcome Providence to Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm and the Friars are slated to tip off at 2 p.m. on BEDN.
