St. John’s Wins Opening Match Against Boston College

The Red Storm won three out of its four rounds
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2021) – St. Johns edged out Boston College in its season opener by winning three of their four rounds, on Saturday morning at Taffner Fieldhouse. The men's team took both of their rounds while the women's team fell in the first round but were able to rebound in the second.
Three Red Storm fencers in the men's saber competition collected at least four wins with Dalton Walker winning all six of his matches. Sophomore Karol Lademann and senior Fares Ferjani each tallied four victories as the squad collected a team-leading 14 triumphs for the Johnnies.
USFCA First Team All-American Ivan Zagoruiko led the way for the men's epee bunch with three tallies while freshman Jack Bell and Alan Slavinsky both picked up their first colligate win. Returners Nathan Vaysberg and Maksym Kariuchenko combined for three victories on the strip, as their squad tacked on nine wins for the Johnnies.
The women's team was led by 2020 NCAA Regional Silver Medalist Andrea Rizzi, as she started off her senior season in dominant fashion. The epee specialist from Latina, Italy, went undefeated against Boston College, accounting for six triumphs for her squad. Sophomore sensation Nicole Gavrilko added on five more victories for the women's epee team.
Freshman saber specialist Fanni Potz-Nagy put on an impressive performance for her first colligate fencing match, posting six victories against no losses. Fifth year fencer Karolina Kaleta added on five more wins for the women's saber team.

Head Coach Yury Gelmen will lead his team to Madison, N.J. on Feb. 14 to face off against Drew University.
