Red Storm improves to 4-0 in 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team improved to 4-0 in 2021, as it took down Quinnipiac, 4-0, on Wednesday at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The victory marked the third already this week for the Red Storm, as it defeated Wagner, 7-0 and 4-0, in a doubleheader on Monday in Queens. The Johnnies are approaching last year's win streak to start the season where they ripped off six consecutive victories to open the campaign.
The match was played in a clinch format, as the first team to four would head home victorious. In doubles, Ignacio Garcia and Giuseppe de Camelis paired up on the No. 1 court, defeating opponents Patrick Cachapero and Hielke Moore, 6-3. Charlie James and Louis-nils Michel took down Kemal Karagozoglu and Shaurya Sood, 6-2 on the No. 3 court. Both doubles pairings improved to 2-0 on the season for the Red Storm.
With the Johnnies picking up the first team point in doubles, it was onto singles where Djuro Opacic, James and de Camelis each picked up victories and team point for the Johnnies.
Opacic got the nod from Coach Dillon Pottish on the No. 1 court, defeating Moore in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0. The win marked the senior from Serbia's third of the season, and second on the No. 1 court. Dating back to 2020, Opacic has won seven consecutive matches.
On the No. 4 court, James took down Cachapero in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-3, to pick up his second victory of the season. The junior did not suit up against Wagner on Monday, but is now 20-2 in singles action since last year.
The fourth and final team point to clinch the match for the Johnnies was won by de Camelis over on the No. 6 court, as the sophomore took down Sood, 6-0 and 6-3, for his third singles win of 2021.
In the matches that went unfinished, Garcia was leading his match, 6-3 and 5-1, on the No. 2 court, while Michel led his contest, 6-2 and 4-1, on the No. 3 court. Finally, Evan Felcher was up in his match as well, 7-6, on the No. 5 court before the contest ended.
The Johnnies will return to action once more this week, as they welcome Fairfield to the St. John's Tennis Courts on Friday at 12 p.m. The match will mark the first outdoor contest of 2021 for the Red Storm.
