St. John’s Softball Splits Doubleheader with Fordham

Red Storm rebound from game one loss to take game two, 4-3
The Red Storm (3-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) offense recorded 15 hits over 12 innings of play and much like this past weekend, was led by Marissa Rizzi and Peyton Cody in the middle of its order. Rizzi, the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week, went 4-7 on the day with a double and two RBI while also hitting her fourth home run in five games. Cody was 5-7 at Fordham, adding a home run, double and two RBI. Melanie Santos picked up her first career hit, a pinch-hit, RBI base knock in the sixth inning of game two that plated what held up to be the game-winning run.
The top performer of the day in the circle was Kayla Kmett (1-1), as she went 6.1 innings for the Johnnies in game two to pick up the win, surrendering no earned runs on three hits. The Rams (3-3) threatened in the seventh inning, but Angela Saric shut the door on the Fordham rally, striking out the final two batters to strand the tying and go-ahead runs on base and picking up her first save of the season.
Game One
In game one, Rizzi picked up where she left off, as she hit a double in the top of the first, but second base was as far as she would get. Mia Faieta (0-1) made her first appearance of the season for the Red Storm in the circle in the first game of the doubleheader, as the Rams greeted her with back-to-back home runs to open the game and take a 2-0 lead out of the first inning.
The Rams would load the bases in the home half of the second and push another run across, as Erin Brown came on to help Faieta wiggle out of the jam. The Red Storm could not find its offensive touch through the first few innings, as it trailed, 4-0, after two innings of play.
The third frame was where the Rams would break the game open, as a lead-off home run by Julie Petrovich, one of five Fordham homers in the game, followed by a rally that sent 11 batters to the plate, had St. John's down, 8-0, after three.
The Rams tacked on five more in the fourth, opening up a 13-0 lead. The Johnnies offense built up some momentum for the second game in the fifth inning, however, as a Gretchen Bowie double plated Meisha Murray, followed by a two-run blast from Rizzi to make it 13-3, but that is where the Red Storm rally ended.
Game Two
The Red Storm's fifth inning offense from game one carried into game two, as Cody's third home run of the season scored Rizzi in the first to give Kmett an early 2-0 lead to take to the circle. The senior right-hander wiggled out of trouble with two runners on in the opening frame to keep the lead intact.
Following a rocky first, Kmett found her groove, as she surrendered just one hit over the next three innings, allowing only four Rams to reach base against her. In the top of the fifth, it was Rizzi back at it again, as the Red Storm graduate student led off the inning with a walk and stole second. Next up was Cody, who sent a shot deep to the right-center field warning track that wasn't handled cleanly, and the Red Storm held a 3-0 lead after four and a half innings.
The Rams broke through in the fifth off of Kmett, as the Johnnies had a costly throwing error that allowed Brianna Pinto to score, making it a 3-1 contest. In the road half of the sixth, Guerriero sent the freshman Santos to the plate to hit for Kamryn Tiumalu, and she delivered what turned out to be the game-winning RBI with a single into right field, her first career hit, that scored Kaitlyn Lologo.
Kmett set Fordham down easily in the sixth and recorded the first out in the seventh before she began to run into some trouble. The Rams strung together two hits and had four runners reach base in the seventh, and with two outs to go and the tying run on third base, Saric came on in relief. The junior pitcher was dominant against the number four and five hitters in the Fordham order, setting them down on strikes to seal the win, 4-3, for the Red Storm.
This weekend marks the beginning of BIG EAST play for St. John's, as they will host DePaul for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday at the same time. All three contests can be streamed via ESPN3.
