Johnnies and Hoyas will meet in front of a national television audience
After knocking off No. 13 Providence on Wednesday afternoon in Rhode Island, the St. John's men's soccer team will look to complete a remarkable road sweep when it travels to No. 3 Georgetown on Saturday afternoon.
The matchup between the Red Storm and the defending national champions will air live nationally on FS1 at 12 p.m. with Monica Moore and Dave Popkin on the call.
Coming into its game against the Johnnies on Wednesday, Providence had yet to surrender a goal in four games, including a scoreless draw against the Hoyas a few days prior. Before the final whistle sounded, the Red Storm found the back of the net twice, spoiling the Friars' undefeated start and snapping a nine-game winless streak against Providence that dated back to 2013.
On Wednesday, the teams were locked in a scoreless tie when Tani Oluwaseyi took the field for the first time in the 58th minute. Five minutes later, the Johnnies were up 1-0 thanks to the junior's fifth goal of the year off a terrific pass from Drew Rosen. 32 minutes later, the final margin stood at 2-0 after Oluwaseyi assisted on a Wesley Leggett insurance goal. The reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and a member of the preseason watch list for the MAC Hermann Trophy, Oluwaseyi has scored all four of the team's game winners this year. Oluwaseyi, along with a number of other key Red Storm contributors, did not suit up for the Red Storm's March 6 loss to Villanova. Oluwaseyi's absence was the result of a lower body injury while nearly a dozen other Johnnies were held out of the lineup due to COVID-19 contract tracing protocols.
In addition to the offense scoring multiple goals for the third time in six games this season, the Red Storm's goalkeepers and back line also pitched their third shutout in six attempts this spring. The Johnnies have surrendered more than one goal in a game just once, a 4-2 win against Stony Brook to wrap the non-conference portion of it schedule.
Saturday's match against the Hoyas, like every conference contest this season, will be critical in terms of the BIG EAST standings. Because of decreased field size for this year's BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship, only the top two teams in each regionalized division will have the opportunity to compete for an automatic bid to the 36-team NCAA Tournament. Currently, St. John's sits fourth in the six-team East Division, just a single point behind a three-way tie for first between Georgetown, Seton Hall and Providence. The Hoyas have played one fewer game than the other three schools.
After having all three of its non-conference matches postponed, Georgetown enters Saturday's contest with an overall record of 2-0-1. The Hoyas have outscored the opposition by a margin of 5-1, shutting out Villanova, 3-0, before taking down Seton Hall, 2-1, in overtime and playing Providence to a scoreless draw last Saturday.
Sophomore midfielder Dante Polvara has scored four of the team's five goals this season, registering a brace against the Wildcats before scoring both of the Hoyas' goals against Seton Hall. Two of the Pleasantville, N.Y., native's four tallies have come via the penalty kick. Chris Hegardt, a 5-foot-9 freshman from San Diego, has the team's other goal this season.
Like the Red Storm, the Hoyas split time in the cage, with Giannis Nikopolidis and Ethan Koehler trading off games. Last season, Nikopolidis shared BIG EAST Co-Goalkeeper of the Year honors with the Red Storm's Jan Hoffelner.
St. John's and Georgetown have met 36 times since 1985 with the Red Storm holding a 23-10-3 all-time edge in the series.
Each side is 2-2-0 since against the other since 2017. At least one team has been ranked in each of the last four meetings between the Red Storm and the Hoyas.
The last contest between the Johnnies and the Hoyas on Oct. 23, 2019, was one of the most hyped regular season matches since the reconfiguration of the BIG EAST. St. John's, ranked no. 4 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and no. 1 in the RPI, welcomed the No. 7 Hoyas, who occupied the RPI's no. 2 spot. A standing-room-only crowd of 2,305 watched the game at Belson Stadium, the second-largest crowd in the two-decade history of the facility.
