Red Storm, Pride will face off for the 48th time in program history
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team will look to rebound from its weekend series with DePaul when it welcomes Hofstra to Queens on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. matchup at Red Storm Field.
The contest can be heard through an audio-only stream or followed with live stats via RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm (3-5, 0-3 BIG EAST) looks to rebound from a hard-fought opening weekend in BIG EAST play where it was swept by DePaul in a three-game series. After losing game one in six innings, 8-0, the Johnnies fell by one run in each of the next two contests. St. John's held a lead in the sixth inning or later in each of those games, but the Blue Demons put together some timely offense, winning game two, 6-5, and game three, 9-8.
Peyton Cody and Marissa Rizzi each continued their hot starts for the Red Storm, as both sluggers recorded hits in two of the three games against DePaul. Cody tallied three RBIs and three hits over the weekend, while Rizzi, who won BIG EAST Player of the Week two weeks ago, was aboard the bases in six of her 11 plate appearances.
Rizzi is currently hitting .500 on the season, which ranks second in the BIG EAST, while leading the conference in on base percentage, slugging percentage and runs scored with 15. Cody ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in batting average, hitting .448 on the season while ranked third with 12 RBIs. She and the Red Storm first baseman each have three home runs, good enough for the team-lead and sixth place in the conference.
Additionally, Gabriella Conca hit safely in each game against DePaul while also scoring three runs. Graduate student Gretchen Bowie added three hits over the weekend, while Amelia Ditolvo knocked in three runs with a triple on Sunday.
The meeting between the Red Storm and Pride marks the 48th all-time matchup between the two teams dating back to the 1981 season. Hofstra leads the all-time series, 35-12. The Pride have taken each of the last 14 meetings between the two teams dating back to the 2004 season.
Due to cancellations, Hofstra (1-4, 0-0 CAA) comes into this game having only played Villanova on the season. The Pride won their first matchup with the Wildcats, 15-4, in five innings at a neutral site in New Jersey, but dropped the next four, with two of them being one-run losses. Hofstra is led by infielder Meghan Giordano, who is hitting .533 on the season to go along with two home runs and eight RBIs, as well as catcher Devyn Losco, who is hitting .625 on the season.
Following Wednesday's game, the Red Storm will look towards a three-game weekend set with Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. followed by a single game on Sunday at noon.
