St. John’s to Welcome Providence on Thursday Afternoon

The Johnnies and Friars will kick off a 3 p.m. on ESPN3
After dropping a pair of decisions to BIG EAST foes, the St. John's women's soccer team will look to get back in the win column on Thursday afternoon, playing host to Providence at 3 p.m. in Queens.
The game will be produced live by SJU-TV and can be viewed on ESPN3, available on the ESPN.com/watch and ESPN app. Ralph Bednarczyk will have the call from Queens.
The Red Storm has been exceptional at home so far this year, sporting a 5-0 record inside the friendly confines of Belson Stadium. On the season, St. John's is outscoring its opponents 13-2 in Queens.
Following five-straight victories to open the 2021 campaign, the Red Storm dropped back-to-back contests on the road last week. The Johnnies fell 1-0 to Connecticut on Thursday before suffering a 1-0 setback at the hands of then-no. 16/25 Georgetown on Sunday.
Despite, suffering her first two losses of the season, Naya Lipkens tallied a combined seven saves over the Johnnies' two-game road swing. On Sunday, Lipkens proved outstanding against the nationally ranked Hoyas. The Bloomfield, Conn., native turned aside four of Georgetown's shots on target, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the 48th minute.
Providence enters Thursday's matchup with the Red Storm boasting an overall record of 5-1-0, including a 3-1-0 mark in BIG EAST play. The Friars are coming off of back-to-back BIG EAST victories over Seton Hall and Villanova. As a team, Providence scored a combined five goals over the two-game stretch. In the Friars' most recent victory over the Wildcats, four different players found the back of the net, as Meg Hughes, Samantha Adams, Elayna Grillakis and Hannah McNulty all scored.
Leading the Friars offensively this season is Hughes, who has tallied a team-high seven points with two goals and three assists. The starting goalkeeper for Providence has been freshman Emma Bodmer. The rookie has recorded 17 saves through six games this season, boasting a .895 save percentage to go along with a 0.35 goals against average.
Thursday will mark the 36th all-time meeting between St. John's and Providence, with the Friars holding a 17-15-3 advantage. The Johnnies will look to pick up their first win over Providence since the 2016 season, when the Red Storm downed the Friars 1-0 at Belson Stadium and advanced to the BIG EAST Semifinals.
Following Thursday's contest with Providence, the Red Storm will return to action on Sunday March 21, traveling to Villanova for 3 p.m. meeting with the Wildcats.
