Teams will play Friday and Sunday in Queens, Saturday doubleheader in the Bronx
Following a tough trip down South, the St. John's baseball team will return to the New York Metropolitan Area for four games against Fordham. The series will start on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Queens before the teams head to the Bronx for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. The Red Storm and the Rams will then wrap the weekend with another single game in Queens on Sunday. First pitch for the series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Friday's game will feature an audio broadcast on RedStormSports.com. The second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Fordham will air on ESPN+ and the Sunday finale will be carried on ESPN3.
After a three-game sweep at the hands of Western Carolina, the Red Storm will look to recapture some of the magic it enjoyed during a seven-game winning streak to start the season in Queens. In those seven victories, the Red Storm hit .322 as a team and averaged 9.0 runs per game. The Johnnies reached base at a .441 clip and slugged .541. Six of the team's nine everyday starters hit .300 or better with a pair, Brandon Miller and David Williams, batting an even .400.
In addition to their success at the dish, the Johnnies were also a dominant force on the mound, allowing just seven earned runs in 61.0 innings (1.03 ERA) and holding opponents to a .154 batting average. The four-man weekend rotation of Nick Mondak, Ian Murphy, Brian Hendry and Sonny Fauci combined to surrender just two earned runs in 38.2 innings of work, including 23.0 scoreless frames from Mondak and Murphy. As a staff, the Red Storm struck out 69 batters while surrendering just 33 walks.
2021 marked the third time in the last five seasons that the Red Storm started off a campaign with seven or more consecutive wins. In 2017, the Johnnies ripped off nine straight victories down South before beginning with eight in a row the following season. Both of those winning streaks came exclusively on the road and featured a win over a top-10 North Carolina team in Chapel Hill. The Johnnies received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and were primed to claim another at-large selection in 2018 before winning a league-record ninth BIG EAST Tournament title.
Despite the lopsided scoring numbers, a few Johnnies turned in solid statistical weekends down in Cullowhee. Vincent Bianchi started all three contests in right field and hit .455 (5-for-11) with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Sacramento City College transfer Nick Cirelli made his first career start in the Sunday finale and promptly went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Colin Wetterau also started one game, going 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Graduate student Carson Bartels started all three games at second base and hit .300 with a double and an RBI. On the mound, Ethan Routzahn recorded his fourth scoreless appearance of the season, striking out a pair in one inning of work during the series finale.
Like the Red Storm, Fordham has been making the most out of its Northeast-centric schedule so far in 2021. Fordham, which has played all eight of its games in New York, is 6-1 at Houlihan Park with a win in its lone road game at Stony Brook.
As a team, the Rams are batting .277, led by junior Jake Guercio hitting at a .476 clip through eight appearances. Three other Rams are north of the .300 mark: Zach Selinger (.346), Jason Coules (.323) and Jack Harnisch (.320).
The Rams' success so far has been in large part due to its pitching, as the Fordham staff has compiled a 2.05 ERA and held opponents to a .177 batting average so far in 2021. Fordham pitchers have fanned 82 batters while surrendering just 38 walks.
Matt Mikulski, Friday's projected starter, has struck out 15 batters in just 9.0 innings of work across two starts and held opponents to a .138 batting average.
St. John's and Fordham will meet on Friday for the first time in more than a decade, as the two historic New York programs last played one another during the 2010 season, an 18-7 victory for the Red Storm in Queens. Joe Panik homered and drove in three runs in that game while Jeremy Baltz and Matt Wessinger also added three RBIs for the Red Storm.
St. John's is 42-10 against Fordham dating back to 1956 and has won 15 of the last 17 games played between the two programs.
The Red Storm is 22-3 in Queens against the Rams since 1956.
A weekend series between Fordham and St. John's was the first set of games to be canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as the teams were scheduled to play each other beginning on March 13, 2020.
