Red Storm, Broncs will play a doubleheader beginning at noon
Lawrenceville, N.J. – The St. John's men's tennis team will hit the road for the first time in 2021 when it travels to Lawrenceville, N.J. to battle Rider on Sunday.
The Red Storm (5-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) will battle the Broncs in a doubleheader on Sunday, with the first contest set to get underway at 12 p.m.
Last time out, the Johnnies took care of business against Fairfield, dropping them, 6-1, last Friday on the St. John's Tennis Courts. The win marked the fourth of the week for the Red Storm, as it defeated Wagner, 7-0 and 4-0, on Monday while beating Quinnipiac, 4-0, on Wednesday at USTA National Tennis Center.
The Red Storm has been dominant through five matches this season, as it has only dropped one team point thus far. The 5-0 start to the 2020 season nearly matches the team's 6-0 beginning to the spring 2020 campaign.
Djuro Opacic has been strong on the No. 1 court this season for the Johnnies, as he has gone undefeated through his first three matches. The senior from Serbia has won eight consecutive contests dating back to the 2020 campaign.
Charlie James was also dominant a week ago, winning both of his singles matches on the No. 4 court for the Red Storm while also prevailing in his two doubles matchups. The junior is now 21-2 in his singles contests dating back to a season ago.
As for Rider, they have yet to play a match in the 2021 season, making the doubleheader with the Red Storm their first game competition since March 1, 2020. The Broncs went 1-7 a season ago, with their only win of the year coming against Lafayette back on Sept. 25, 2019. Sunday's doubleheader will mark the first time the two programs have faced off.
Following their match with Rider, the Johnnies will welcome Queens College to campus on Tuesday as the two squads will face off at 3:30 on the St. John's Tennis Courts. Following that matchup, they will take on Army and Boston University before the end of the month.
