St. John’s Men’s Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader at Rider

Red Storm improves to 7-0 on the season
Lawrenceville, N.J. (March 21, 2021) – The St. John's men's tennis team swept its doubleheader with Rider on Sunday, 4-0 and 6-0, to pick up two wins and improve to 7-0 on the season.
The Red Storm has now kept its opponent from recording a team point in six of its seven matches this season and has surpassed last year's six-game winning streak to open the spring season. The current win streak is the program's longest since the Johnnies won 13 in a row en route to a BIG EAST Tennis Championship in 2019.
The wins at Rider marked the first on the road for the Red Storm this season, as its first five contests were all played in Queens. Dylan Loru and Giuseppe De Camelis each won two singles contests on the day, while the doubles pairings of Ignacio Garcia and Loru as well as Matthew Mosejczuk and Louis-nils Michel each notched two victories.
Match One
The Johnnies put forth a dominant effort in the opening match, as no Rider player or doubles pairing recorded more than two points in a single set. Evan Felcher and Djuro Opacic dominated the No. 1 doubles court, winning 6-1, while Garcia and Loru took their match, 6-2, on the No. 2 court. Finally, Michel and Mosejczuk blanked their opponent on the No. 3 court, winning 6-0.
Singles play was done in a clinch format and featured Opacic, Loru and De Camelis winning each of their matches for the Johnnies. Opacic got his usual nod on the No. 1 court and the senior from Serbia delivered a straight-set victory, 6-0 and 6-2, to take his ninth consecutive match dating back to last season and his fourth of 2021.
On the No. 4 court, De Camelis was dominant for the Red Storm, shutting his opponent out in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0. The sophomore did not surrender a point against in both singles and doubles play in the afternoon's first match.
Finally, on the No. 5 court, Loru took both of his sets, 6-0 and 6-2, to improve to 4-0 on the season. The matches featuring Michel, Felcher and Mosejczuk on the Nos. 2, 3 and 6 courts went unfinished, as the Red Storm clinched its fifth shutout effort of the season.
Match Two
The second contest between the two squads featured two doubles matchups, as Garcia and Loru won, 6-0, and Michel and Mosejczuk took their matchup, 6-3, to earn the team point for the Johnnies and give them a lead, 1-0.
Garcia got the nod on the No. 1 court after not participating in the first match and won in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1, to earn his third victory of the season. On the No. 2 court, Michel grabbed a decisive victory, winning each set by a score of 6-3 to notch his fourth singles victory thus far in 2021.
On the No. 3 court, De Camelis won his second decision of the afternoon, 6-1 and 6-1, to earn his fourth victory of 2021. The sophomore from Italy is now 17-4 in his collegiate career, and 14-3 going back to last spring season. Felcher won his only decision of the day on the No. 4 court, taking the match 6-2 and 6-4, to earn his fifth victory which is tied for the best number on the team.
Mosejczuk's match on the No. 5 court was ruled a DNF and on the sixth court, Loru won his second match of the day, 6-2 and 6-1, in straight sets, to also pick up his fifth victory on the year and lift the Red Storm, 6-0.
The Johnnies will play three more matches in the month of March, as they will first welcome Queens College to St. John's on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Following that contest, the Red Storm will travel to Army and close out the month at a neutral site against Boston University.
