The Pirates’ Laura Hooper converted on the game-winning goal in the 110th minute
With the score knotted at 2-2 and 21 seconds to play in the second overtime period, Seton Hall's Laura Hooper converted on the game-winning goal to lift the Pirates past St. John's, 3-2, on Thursday evening at Owen T. Carroll Field.
The Red Storm's leading scorers Zsani Kajan and Jessica Garziano each found the back of the net for St. John's. Garziano, who ranked third in the BIG EAST in scoring entering the contest, bumped her season total to six goals. Kajan has now tallied four goals this season, increasing her career total to 28. Addison Hornsey picked up her first assist of the 2021 campaign on Garziano's goal.
Trailing 2-1 in the 64th minute, Seton Hall tied the game at two apiece, with a goal from Hooper. After neutralizing the Pirates attack through the first 19 minutes of extra time, St. John's surrendered the game winner in the 110th minute.
St. John's (5-3-1, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) outshot Seton Hall (2-6-0, 1-6-0 BIG EAST) by a wide margin, tallying 28 chances to the Pirates' 13. The Johnnies also earned 11 corners to Seton Hall's seven.
Following the first 45 minutes of action, St. John's held a 7-5 advantage in shots, including a 4-2 edge in strikes on target but neither side managed to put one of those tries on net.
Seton Hall broke through first in the 52nd minute, as Naomi Welch's strike bounced over the head of Naya Lipkens and into the goal.
Nearly eight minutes later Kajan netted the equalizer for the Red Storm. The Budapest, Hungary, native made a spectacular play, dribbling around a trio of Seton Hall defenders before sending a shot to the right corner of the cage to knot the game at 1-1.
Just over a minute later, the Johnnies struck again as Garziano rocketed a shot to the top of the cage, giving St. John's a 2-1 advantage. The sequence began as Hornsey sent a long pass up to Garziano from just outside the box. The Melville, N.Y., native sent a powerful strike over the head of the Seton Hall goalkeeper.
The Red Storm held a one-goal advantage for just four minutes before Hooper, the Pirate's leading goal scorer, netted the game-tying tally, bringing the score to 2-2.
Still tied after 100 minutes of action, the contest went into double overtime. With 21 seconds remaining, Hooper send a shot to the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
St. John's returns to action on Sunday, as the Johnnies play host to Connecticut. The Red Storm and the Huskies will kick off at 2 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
