St. John’s Finishes Fifth at NCAA Championships

Both Kaleta and Gavrilko rank third at NCAA Championships
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (Mar. 28, 2021) – The St. John's fencing team finished fifth overall at the NCAA Fencing Championships on Sunday, as epee fencer Nicole Gavrilko and saber fencer Karolina Kaleta both tied for third place.
Gavrilko and Kaleta also garnered First Team All-American honors.
For the 28th straight-year, the Red Storm finished inside the top-six under the guidance of Head Coach Yury Gelman.
Notre Dame won its 11th NCAA title in program history with 201 points. Penn State College came in second with 182 points, followed by Duke University (130 points), New Jersey Institute of Technology (106 points), and St. John's (106 points).
Kaleta, a veteran saber fencer, saw the best finish of her Red Storm career. The Warsaw, Poland native tied for third overall, winning 15 of her 21 bouts. The graduate student was defeated in the women's saber semifinals, 15-9, by Sky Miller of Northwestern University. With her top three finish, the graduate student earned First Team All-American honors.
Gavrilko captured 15 victories on the stripe in her first NCAA Tournament appearance. The sophomore met Kaylin Hsieh of Notre Dame in the women's epee semifinals, falling 15-9. Gavrilko also placed third to earn a spot on the All-American First Team.
Junior Arianna Pappone was named to the All-American Third Team with her ninth place ranking in the women's foil competition. The Latina, Italy, native captured 11 wins on the piste and outscored her opponents by 16 touches.
Freshman Fanni Potz-Nagy made her NCAA Championship debut, placing 13th in the women's saber competition.
As a team, five Red Storm fencers were named All-Americans, with four garnering first team recognition.
