Red Storm Blanks Villanova in BIG EAST Opener

St. John’s runs winning streak to ten matches
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team won its BIG EAST opener on Wednesday afternoon, blanking Villanova, 7-0, at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The victory brought the Red Storm's win streak to open the season to ten, as it has now taken 58 of 59 possible team points in all of its matches. The win marked the first for the Johnnies in BIG EAST play since February of last year against Xavier.
The afternoon began with doubles play, as the Head Coach Dillon Pottish paired up Ignacio Garcia and Giuseppe De Camelis, Charlie James and Louis-nils Michel, as well as Evan Felcher and Djuro Opacic. The Red Storm dominated the Nos. 1 and 3 courts, as Garcia and De Camelis took their match, 6-1, while Felcher and Opacic prevailed, 6-3. The No. 2 court was tightly contested, but James and Michel took it in a tiebreaker, 7-5.
With the Red Storm picking up the doubles point for the eighth time in nine tries, it was onto singles, where the home team dominated. On the No. 1 court, Opacic picked up his eighth win of the season, taking the match, 6-4 and 6-2. On the No. 2 court, Garcia was dominant once again, winning 6-2 and 6-3 to bring his record on the Nos. 1-3 courts to 15-0 dating back to the 2020 campaign.
On the No. 3 court, Michel played the most lopsided match of the afternoon, winning in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-1. The victory marked the seventh thus far for the senior from France, who has already surpassed his win total from a season ago.
James played the closest match of the afternoon on the No. 4 court, winning in straight sets, 6-2 and 7-6. The Red Storm junior is now 23-2 in singles play dating back to last season.
On the Nos. 5 and 6 courts, Felcher and De Camelis each took their matches in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1, to help the Red Storm secure the shutout victory, its ninth of the season.
The contest with Villanova was one of two BIG EAST contests on the calendar for the Johnnies in the regular season, as they will travel down to our nation's capital to battle Georgetown next Sunday. Next up for the Red Storm is a match with Monmouth on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the St. John's Tennis Courts.
