Red Storm sees ten-match winning streak snapped by the Hawks
Queens, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2021 season on Saturday afternoon, 4-3, at the St. John's Tennis Courts.
The loss snapped a ten-match winning streak that extended all the way back to the team's season opener on Feb. 24. Up until Saturday afternoon's battle, the Red Storm had taken 58 of 59 team points on the season but ran into its toughest test yet in Monmouth.
The Red Storm and Hawks opened the match with doubles play, as the pairings of Ignacio Garcia and Giuseppe De Camelis as well as Louis-nils Michel and Charlie James fell on the Nos. 1 and 2 courts before Djuro Opacic and Evan Felcher picked up a win, 6-3, in the No. 3 slot.
With Monmouth taking the opening point it was onto singles play, where the Red Storm played some of the more tightly contested matches that is has all season. The Johnnies dominated the Nos. 1 and 2 courts, as Opacic took his match in straight sets, 6-3 and 7-6, and Garcia prevailed on the No. 2 court once again, 6-1 and 6-1. The victory marked Opacic's ninth of the campaign and for Garcia, he improved to 16-0 on the Nos. 1-3 courts dating back to last season.
The Nos. 3 and 4 courts were taken by the Hawks, as Michel dropped his match, 6-3 and 7-6, on the No. 3 court before James fell in three sets, 2-6, 7-6, 3-6, on the No. 4 court. The losses were the first on the season for both.
