QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will look to remain undefeated when it welcomes Monmouth to Queens for a Saturday afternoon matchup.
The Red Storm (10-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) and Hawks (6-2, 0-0 MAAC) will square off at the St. John's Tennis Courts at 2 p.m.
The Johnnies come off a dominant 7-0 victory over Villanova in their BIG EAST opener on Wednesday afternoon at USTA National Center. The Red Storm is off to one of its best starts in program history, as it has taken 58 of 59 team points thus far in 2021. The ten-match winning streak is just three off of the team's streak of 13 which led them to a BIG EAST Championship in 2019.
Ignacio Garcia has been one of the team's top performers of late, as his performance last week against Queens College and Boston University earned him BIG EAST Tennis Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career. Garcia put forth a strong performance against the Wildcats on Wednesday as well, winning in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-3.
Garcia's been part of the team success for a Red Storm group that has not dropped a singles match all season to this point. Djuro Opacic has been strong on the No. 1 court in 2021 as well where he is 7-0 thus far in 2021. Evan Felcher, Louis-nils Michel and Charlie James each picked up victories for the Red Storm against the Wildcats on Wednesday.
Monmouth is 6-2 thus far in 2021 and comes into Saturday afternoon's matchup riding a four-match winning streak. Most recently, the Hawks defeated La Salle on Tuesday, 4-0, as they have not allowed their opponent to record a team point in the last three matches. Senior Cooke Wharton and fifth-year Sergio Martinez have each earned MAAC Player of the Week honors this season.
The Red Storm and Hawks last faced off in the 2019 season in West Long Branch, N.J. and the result was a Monmouth victory, 4-3. Following Saturday's matchup, the Johnnies will have a busy slate of matches next week as they take on Hofstra on Wednesday, Drexel on Thursday and finally Georgetown on Sunday.
