Peyton Cody’s two home runs, three four-run innings power the Red Storm
On a chilly afternoon in Queens, the Red Storm (1-0) logged 10 hits in its first game since March 11, 2020. The Johnnies never trailed, as Erin Brown picked up the win in relief of Kayla Kmett, surrendering just one hit and one earned run over 3.1 innings of relief. Four Johnnies logged multi-hit performances as graduate students Marissa Rizzi and Gretchen Bowie each went 2-3 and combined for four runs, while Amelia Ditolvo went 2-2 to go along with Cody's big afternoon.
The Johnnies offense got off to a hot start, as they batted around in the first inning and scored four runs. Elyse Morris led off the inning with a single to left field which was followed up by a Gretchen Bowie sac bunt. Following the bunt, Rizzi walked, and the Rams unraveled defensively, committing two costly errors and allowing four Johnnies to cross the plate.
Kmett worked 1.2 innings of two-run ball, as the Rams were able to plate a pair of runs in the visitor half of the second inning. With two outs in the second and two runs already in, Brown relieved Kmett and struck out Alex Pleasic to end the threat and keep the Red Storm advantage at two, 4-2.
Both teams failed push a run across in the third before the Johnnies exploded for four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kaitlin Mattera led off the inning with a walk, which was followed by base knocks from Kalei Sorensen and Ditolvo, the latter of which brought home a run. Bowie and Rizzi then added singles before the clean-up hitter, Cody, smacked her first home run of the day over the right-center field fence to give the Red Storm an 8-2 advantage after four.
The Rams pushed across their only run of the day against Brown in the top of the fifth, as Erica Robles sent a solo shot off the left field scoreboard to cut into the Johnnies lead. The sophomore righthander worked 3.2 innings of one-run, one-hit relief while striking out two Rams.
With the Red Storm needing just three runs in the home half of the fifth to end the contest, Ditolvo, who went 2-for-2 on the afternoon, singled to lead off the inning. Morris was then hit by a pitch before Rizzi delivered a two-RBI double into the right-center field gap to put the Red Storm up 10-3. Rizzi, who missed all of 2020, scored two runs as well as picking up multiple hits in the win.
With one out in the inning and in need of just one run to end the game, Cody delivered her second blast of the afternoon into a nearly identical location in right-center field to give the Red Storm the win, 12-3. The 2019 BIG EAST Co-Freshman of the Year hit the eighth and ninth home runs of her career and recorded the second multi-home run effort of her Red Storm tenure. Her five RBIs were also a career-high.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Saturday when it faces UMass Lowell in a doubleheader starting at noon at Red Storm Field. An audio stream of both contests can be heard on RedStormSports.com.
