Red Storm will look to build off win in season opener
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 7, 2021) – The St. John's men's tennis team will take the court for the first time in nearly two weeks on Monday when it hosts Wagner College for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at USTA National Tennis Center.
Last time out, the Red Storm defeated Sacred Heart, 7-0, in its first match of the season. Coach Dillon Pottish's team was next slated to take on Drexel this past Saturday March 6, but the match was canceled due to the Dragons' Covid-19 protocols.
The win against Sacred Heart back on Feb. 24 marked the sixth straight win for the men's tennis team dating back to 2020. It was also the third time in four seasons that the Johnnies have defeated the Pioneers.
In that contest, the doubles pairings of Ignacio Garcia and Charlie James, Dylan Loru and Louis-nils Michel as well as Evan Felcher and Djuro Opacic each won their matches, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-1 respectively.
In singles play, Garcia and Opacic each won their matches in the No. 1 and 2 slots, while Michel and James dominated the No. 3 and 4 courts, allowing their opponents to earn a total of five points. Over on the No. 5 and 6 courts, it was Felcher and Dylan Loru picking up a win each to seal the 7-0 victory.
Monday's contests will mark the first for Wagner in 366 days, as they last played on March 7 of last season against Navy and Coppin State, a doubleheader that they split. The Seahawks went 2-7 a year ago. This marks the fourth straight season where the Red Storm has matched up with Wagner, as it has taken each of the three matches between the two teams.
Following this match, the Johnnies will be back in action twice more throughout the week, as they host Quinnipiac on Wednesday at USTA National Tennis Center followed by a Friday date with Fairfield at Cunningham Park.
