Red Storm improves to 3-0 in 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 8, 2021) – The St. John's men's tennis team improved to 3-0 in 2021, defeating Wagner in two matches on Monday afternoon, 7-0 and 4-0, at USTA National Tennis Center.
The two matches were the first time that the Red Storm had taken the court in nearly two weeks following their season opening victory over Sacred Heart back on Feb. 24. The Johnnies have not dropped a single set yet through their first three matches of the 2021 season.
Match One
The two squads kicked things off with doubles play, as the pairing of Djuro Opacic and Evan Felcher won their match over Rodrigo Perez and Aryan Gupta by a wide margin, 6-1. Over on the No. 2 Court, it was Giuseppe De Camelis and Louis-nils Michel taking their bout with Odeda Arazza and Seong Gillespie, 6-2. Wagner was forced to default the No. 3 doubles match due to a lack of manpower, as the Red Storm grabbed a 1-0 advantage.
The Johnnies led off singes play with Opacic, who defeated his opponent Perez in straight sets while not allowing him to score a single point. Dating back to last spring, the senior from Serbia has won six consecutive singles matches. On the No. 2 court, Michel defeated Arazza by 6-1 and 6-0 scores to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Felcher got the nod from Coach Dillon Pottish on the No. 3 court and picked up his second career win in a Red Storm uniform, grabbing the victory in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-3. On the No. 4 court it was de Camelis blanking his opponent Gillespie in straight sets by 6-0 scores. The Seahawks were forced to default on the No. 5 and 6 courts, giving the Johnnies the 7-0 victory.
Match Two
The second match between the Seahawks and Johnnies was played to four due to a lack of players on the Wagner side. Singles play kicked off with Felcher squaring off against Arazza, and with the Red Storm junior leading 5-1 in the first set, his opponent was forced to default due to injury as he picked up the win.
On the No. 2 court, de Camelis won his second singles contest of the day for the Red Storm, 6-0 and 6-1. Dylan Loru picked up his second win of the season for the Red Storm on the No. 3 court, defeating Gupta in two sets by 6-2 margins.
Finally, on the No. 4 court, it was the latest addition to the Johnnies, Matthew Mosejczuk, sweeping both of his sets, 6-0 and 6-0. The win marks the first in the freshman Mosejczuk's collegiate career after joining the team just a few weeks ago, and lifted the team to a 4-0 victory.
The Johnnies will be back in action twice more this week as they get set to host Quinnipiac at USTA National Tennis Center on Wednesday at 12 p.m. followed by a matchup on Friday at Cunningham Park with Fairfield.
