Red Storm remains unbeaten in 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team improved to 3-0 on Sunday night, taking down Fairfield, 6-1, at USTA National Tennis Center.
The Red Storm has now combined to take 20 of 21 possible points from its opponents over the first three matches of the season in its wins over Sacred Heart, Wagner and now, Fairfield.
Head Coach Lauren Leo stuck with her typical doubles' pairings through the first three matches, as Oceane Garibal and Najah Dawson teamed up to win their match on the No. 1 court, 6-2. Over the last two seasons, that pairing is now 14-5 in doubles play. Emilie Haakansson and Kajsa Stegrell won their match on the No. 2 court, 5-3, while the duo of Gabriela Tenorio and Camila Ordonez took care of business on the No. 3 court, 6-3.
With the Johnnies picking up the point in doubles play, it was onto singles, where Coach Leo kept things the same as in the team's win over Wagner on Friday. Dawson improved to 3-0 on the season, dropping freshman Scarlett Hutchinson in two sets, 7-5 and 6-3, on the No. 1 court.
Haakansson, the transfer from Northern Arizona, improved to 3-0 in a Red Storm uniform, defeating Amanda Nowak easily, 6-0 and 6-1, in straight sets. On the No. 3 court, it was Garibal winning her matchup with Aina March, 6-0 and 6-2. The graduate student continues to be strong in that spot for St. John's, as she has now won seven of her ten matches dating back to last spring.
Over on the No. 4 court, Tenorio dropped the lone matchup of the night for the Johnnies, as she fell to Francesca Karman, 7-5 and 6-3, in two sets.
The No. 5 court featured the only duel of the night that went the distance, as Stegrell won her first set over Sophia Prinos, 6-2, but fell in the second set, 7-5. The third set was tightly contested, but the senior from Stockholm prevailed, 10-6, to seal her third singles victory of 2021.
On the No. 6 court, Ordonez got the nod for the second straight match and took down Anna Komer, 6-4 and 6-2, to pick up the victory. The sophomore won a similar match a year ago when she was also playing in the No. 6 slot against Fairfield.
After a busy week that featured three matches, the Red Storm will have four days off before Army visits Queens next Friday. That will be the team's final nonconference matchup before BIG EAST play kicks off a week later at Seton Hall.
