Red Storm Hosts Fordham, NJIT in Final Weekend of Regular Season

Johnnies will play two final two nonconference matches before postseason competition
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will host Fordham on Saturday and NJIT on Sunday in Queens this weekend to close out the 2021 regular season.
The Red Storm (12-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) welcomes the Rams to the St. John's Tennis Courts on Saturday at 2 p.m. before NJIT travels to Queens for a 1 p.m. Sunday showdown.
In the Red Storm's last contest on Tuesday, the team took down Temple, 4-2, to earn its 12th victory of the season. The Johnnies took the doubles point from the Owls before Ignacio Garcia, Charlie James and Giuseppe De Camelis each picked up singles wins to seal the victory.
Garcia has been one of the team's biggest weapons this season, winning all nine of his matches in straight sets with seven of those wins, including Tuesday's victory, coming on the No. 2 court. Djuro Opacic suffered his first defeat of the 2021 campaign on the No. 1 court against Temple which marked his first loss in his last 13 matches dating back to last season.
Evan Felcher and De Camelis are each tied with Opacic for the team lead in wins this season with ten. De Camelis has been dominant for the Red Storm in 2021, dropping just one of his 11 matches on the year. Overall, the sophomore is 23-5 in his collegiate year.
The Rams are 4-2 thus far in 2021 and fell to Temple in their most recent match by a score of 6-1 last Sunday in Philadelphia. Fordham has defeated Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, Queens College and La Salle this season. Alex Makatsaria is the team's leader in wins this season with five, while Fabian Mauritzon is 2-4 on the No. 1 court.
The Johnnies and Rams last met in the 2018 season and the result was a Red Storm victory, 7-0. In its last four matches with Fordham, the Red Storm has taken each in shutout fashion.
As for NJIT, they are 7-4 on the season, having most recently fallen to Villanova, 6-1, last Saturday. Ashwin Kanetkar leads the team in wins this season with eight, while Abdullah Fouad has played ten of the team's 11 matches this season on the No. 1 court where he is 6-4 on the season.
The Johnnies and Highlanders last faced off in 2017, a Red Storm victory, 5-2. Overall, the Red Storm has defeated NJIT in each of the last three contests between the two teams.
Following the weekend's two games, the Red Storm will look towards the BIG EAST Tennis Championships which begin next Thursday in Cayce, S.C. as it looks to defend the 2019 BIG EAST title.
