Red Storm improves to 13-1 on the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team dropped Fordham, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at the St. John's Tennis Courts in Queens to pick up its 13th win of the season.
The Red Storm (13-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) won its third consecutive match as it picked up the team point in doubles before Djuro Opacic, Ignacio Garcia and Evan Felcher each picked up wins in singles play to seal the victory.
In doubles competition, Opacic and Felcher grabbed a win, 6-2, on the No. 2 court while Giuseppe De Camelis and Dylan Loru won their contest, 6-3, on the No. 3 court. Garcia and Charlie James battle on the No. 1 court went down as a DNF. The pairing of Felcher and Opacic improved to 9-1 on the season while Loru and De Camelis moved to 1-1.
With the Johnnies securing the doubles point, just three points were needed for victory in the match and Opacic grabbed one of them on the No. 1 court, winning his match in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0. The win marked the Red Storm senior's 11th of the season after losing his first and only contest of the season against Temple on Tuesday.
Garcia continued his dominant play this season on the No. 2 court, dropping his opponent in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-4. The victory marked the tenth in 2021 for the Red Storm senior and his eighth in the No. 2 slot.
Finally, on the no. 4 court, it was De Camelis who was able to seal the victory for the Red Storm, winning his match in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0. The Red Storm sophomore earned his 11th win of 2021 which is now the most on the team this season. In his collegiate career, the native of Trani, Italy is now 24-5.
The Red Storm will be back in action tomorrow when it closes out the regular season against NJIT. The match is set to fall underway at 1 p.m. on the St. John's Tennis Courts.
