St. John’s Heads to Providence for Final Match of Regular Season

Red Storm looks to pick up a win before postseason play
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team travels to Providence Sunday afternoon for a 1 p.m. BIG EAST showdown to close out the regular season.
The Red Storm (5-1, 1-1 BIG EAST) is coming off of a victory, 4-3, over Stony Brook on Wednesday morning, The win for the Johnnies marked the first in nearly a month for the team, as they last won before that on March 19 against Seton Hall.
Emilie Haakansson, Kajsa Stegrell and Willa Bay Breunich each picked up singles wins for the Johnnies against the Seawolves, while the team also grabbed the team point in doubles in what was the team's hardest-fought victory of 2021.
Stegrell and Haakansson each lead the team in victories this season with five. Stegrell is undefeated in each of her five matches this season, with four of those wins coming in straight sets. As for Haakansson, the transfer from Northern Arizona University has had a strong start to her career in a Red Storm uniform where she is 5-1.
As for Providence, they come into the match with the Red Storm sitting at 1-8 on the season, including an 0-3 mark in BIG EAST play. The Friars lone win this season came against Bentley, a 7-0 victory back on April 1. In their two most recent matches, the Friars have fallen to Villanova and Connecticut by scores of 7-0 each.
The Johnnies and Friars last matched up in April 2019 and the result was a Red Storm victory, 6-1. In that contest, Jessica Livianu, Najah Dawson and Oceane Garibal each earned singles wins for the Red Storm, who has beaten the Friars in each of its last 13 meetings dating back to the 2004 season.
Following the matchup with Providence, the Red Storm will shift its focus to the BIG EAST Tennis Championships, which will kick off next Thursday in Cayce, S.C. The Johnnies last captured the conference title in the 2017-18 campaign.
