St. John’s Drops Providence, 6-1, to Close Regular Season

Red Storm finishes 2021 with a record of 6-1
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The St. John's women's tennis team took down Providence on the road, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon to close out the 2021 regular season.
The Red Storm (6-1, 2-1 BIG EAST) earned its second straight victory after defeating Stony Brook on Wednesday morning. The Johnnies earned the team point in doubles before winning all but one of the singles matches in their regular season finale.
Najah Dawson and Camila Ordonez teamed up for the first time in doubles play this season and took down their opponents, 6-3, on the No. 1 doubles court. In the No. 2 slot, it was Kajsa Stegrell and Emilie Haakansson back together for the Red Storm, earning a 6-2 victory which would seal the first team point of the day for the Johnnies.
Haakansson made her first appearance of the season on the No. 1 court for the Red Storm and fell to Julia Migliorini, 4-6, 6-4 and 4-6 in three sets. The loss was just the second on the season for the junior transfer, as she fell to 5-2 to close out her first season in Queens.
On the No. 2 court, Gabriela Tenorio earned her third victory of the season in three sets. After going down in the first frame, the Red Storm senior rallied, winning the final two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-0 en route to the victory.
Stegrell was dominant yet again for the Johnnies on the No. 3 court, taking her match in straight sets. The Red Storm senior finished the regular season with an overall record of 6-0 in singles play after not playing in a singles contest a year ago.
On the No. 4 court, Ordonez was dominant for the Johnnies taking her match in straight sets and blanking her opponent, 6-0 and 6-0, to earn her fourth win of the 2021 campaign. Willa Bay Breunich got the nod on the No. 5 court and won in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-0.
Finally on the No. 6 court, Jenelle Downer made her first appearance of the season and took down her opponent in three sets, dropping the first 2-6, but taking the final two frames by scores of 6-2 and 6-2.
The Red Storm will now shift its focus to the BIG EAST Tennis Championships which kick off this coming Thursday down in Cayce, S.C. Stay tuned to @StJohnsWTennis on Twitter for information on the Johnnies first tournament match as well as their seeding.
