Jack Simon claims second individual title with a 6-under 204
– For the first time in program history, the St. John's men's golf team captured the team title at The Doc Gimmler on Sunday afternoon, as junior Jack Simon claimed his second individual win of the year.
The Red Storm's 54-hole effort of 13-under par marked the best of Head Coach Mal Galletta's coaching tenure and the third best in program history.
"I am extremely proud of this team and the way they finished the tournament," said Coach Galletta. "It was three terrific rounds of golf from everyone. They have worked extremely hard and deserve it. This is a great way to head into the BIG EAST Championship."
The Red Storm dominated the final round, carding a tournament-low 9-under 271 to earn its fourth-straight team title, and enter the postseason with a program-high five victories. The Johnnies drained a team-most 55 birdies on the weekend, with 21 coming over the last 18 holes.
Simon, who was named the conference's top male golfer in back-to-back weeks, claimed his second individual title of the season, shooting a three-round 6-under 204. With two wins through eight events this year, Simon is one of just 11 golfers in program history to earn medalist honors twice in a season.
Entering the day at 4-under 136, Simon drained four birdies over the final 18 holes to finish 2-under par for the third-straight round.
Two other players produced top-three finishes for St. John's as junior Tyler Gerbavsits and sophomore Ryan Rittberger placed second and third at the team's home event. Entering the final round at 2-under par, Gerbavsits signed off on a season-best 67 to close out play one-stroke back of Simon. The Huntington, N.Y., native went bogey-free over the final 18 holes, draining a trio of birdies on the day.
Rittberger was outstanding over the final 18 holes, draining six birdies for a career-low 64. The Greenlawn, N.Y., native's 6-under par is tied with former St. John's standout Gerald Mackedon for the best round by a St. John's golfer at The Doc Gimmler.
"To have three players finish one, two, three is a great performance. I am happy for Jack, Tyler and Ryan on their great play over the final round."
Junior Joseph Busiello, who was competing as an individual, and sophomore Alex Kyriacou each cared a three-round 215 (+5), to finish in a four-way tie for 11th place.
Freshman Doug Beney and sophomore Gage Wolfle wrapped up scoring for the Red Storm carding a 218 and 226, respectively.
St. John's will look to maintain its momentum April 26-28, as the team travels to Bowling Green, Fla., for the BIG EAST Championship.
