QUEENS, N.Y. (April 18, 2021) – The St. John's softball team will play consecutive weekday games when it welcomes Providence to Queens on Monday and travels to Stony Brook on Tuesday.
The Red Storm (8-13, 5-9 BIG EAST) and Friars (2-10, 1-7 BIG EAST) will play a makeup game from March 28 with first pitch slated for noon on Monday. Tuesday's game against the Seawolves (18-8, 5-0 America East) is slated for 3 p.m. Both games will be televised and live stats will be available for each contest.
The Johnnies have not taken the field since last Sunday at Creighton, where they fell, 12-9, dropping the series two games to one. The Red Storm was scheduled to take on Hofstra this past Thursday, but the game was canceled due to the weather forecast.
In the series against the Bluejays, the Red Storm took game one, 3-2, but dropped games two and three behind walkoff home runs from Creighton. Despite the loss in game three of the series, 12-9, the Red Storm had its best offensive day of the season, as five players recorded multiple hits for a season-high total of 15. Kalei Sorensen, Peyton Cody and Kaitlin Mattera each slugged home runs in that one.
For Mattera, the home run was her second of the weekend, as she also hit one which proved to plate the game-winning run in game one on Saturday. The Red Storm graduate student's performance at Creighton earned her BIG EAST Player of the Week honors, as she led the conference in batting average, going 8-12 on the weekend to earn the award for the first time in her career.
Gretchen Bowie also had a big series at Creighton, smacking six hits over the weekend including a home run. The Red Storm third baseman has recorded eight multi-hit games this season while also leading the BIG EAST in doubles with nine heading into this weekend.
The Red Storm won each of its first two games with the Friars this season, sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 4-0 and 4-1. Both Erin Brown and Kayla Kmett each threw complete games against Providence, with Brown tossing a shutout in game one and Kmett surrendering just one hit in game two. The Friars are coming off a weekend where they were swept at the hands of Villanova in three games. Providence will be looking for its first win since March 13 when they take on the Johnnies.
Tuesday's contest at Stony Brook will mark the first of two meetings between the two teams this season, as they will also face off on May 4 in Queens. In the Seawolves most recent contest, they blanked Seton Hall, 2-0, as starter Dawn Bodrug surrendered just one hit in the game. Stony Brook, who is currently undefeated in conference play, boasts the top team ERA in the America East at 2.22 this season. The Johnnies lead the all-time matchup between the programs, winning seven of the ten meetings, but fell most recently in 2019, 25-6.
Following the two games during the week, the Red Storm will shift its focus towards a three-game weekend series with BIG EAST rival Villanova in Queens. The Johnnies will battle the Wildcats in a doubleheader on Saturday before a single game on Sunday which will feature a celebration for the Red Storm senior class.
