Red Storm held to one hit in Tuesday afternoon defeat
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team fell, 2-0, to Stony Brook in a road nonconference matchup on Tuesday afternoon.
The Red Storm (9-14, 6-9 BIG EAST) was held to just one hit against the Seawolves (19-8, 5-0 America East) on the afternoon. Stony Brook starter Melissa Rahrich worked the complete game shutout, fanning six and surrendering just two base runners to a St. John's lineup that did not play most of its regular starters. The Johnnies lone hit on the afternoon came off the bat of Natalie Alheidt, a triple to right field, in the second inning.
Angela Saric (1-2) got her fourth start of the season for the Red Storm and pitched well, surrendering two runs over six innings while allowing eight hits and striking out one batter. The lone two runs for Stony Brook both came in the third inning.
The Johnnies' offense went down in order in the first before Saric worked a quick home half of the opening frame as well. In the top of the second, the first two Red Storm batters were set down before Alheidt delivered a triple to right field, her first hit of the season, in what was only her second at bat. Anna Freveletti looked to get her in with two down and hit a liner to first that was caught to end the inning.
The Seawolves would threaten in the home half of the second, sending two into scoring position, but Saric got a groundout to end the frame.
After the Red Storm was set down in order in the third, Stony Brook jumpstarted its offense. The Seawolves compiled two runs on three hits in the home half of the third, leaving the bases loaded, to grab the 2-0 advantage which proved to be the difference in the game.
After the Stony Brook rally in the fourth, the lone Red Storm batter to reach base in the remainder of the game came in the fourth, as Kaitlyn Lologo was hit by a pitch with two outs.
As for Saric, she settled in after the third inning, allowing just two hits the rest of the afternoon and not surrendering a run over the final three innings that she worked. The Johnnies offense could not mount a comeback, however, falling, 2-0, in what was just the second time they were shut out this season.
The Red Storm will be back in action this weekend as it welcomes Villanova to Queens for a crucial BIG EAST series. The Johnnies and Wildcats will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday with first pitch also scheduled for 12 p.m. Following game three of the series, St. John's will celebrate its class of eight graduate students and seniors.
