Johnnies eliminated at the BIG EAST Tennis Championships in match that spanned two days
CAYCE, S.C. – The No. 4 St. John's women's tennis team fell to No. 1 Xavier, 4-1, in a BIG EAST Tennis Championships semifinal match that began on Saturday morning and concluded Sunday afternoon due to poor weather.
The Red Storm finished the 2021 campaign with an overall record of 7-2 while going 3-2 in BIG EAST matches on the season. As for Xavier, they advance to the finals of the BIG EAST Tennis Championships where they will battle No. 2 DePaul on Monday morning.
Doubles play began and was completed on Saturday morning, as the first match to go final came on the No. 3 court, where Camila Ordonez and Gabriela Tenorio fell, 6-0. On the No.1. court, Najah Dawson and Jessica Livianu took their match easily, 6-2, as the team point came down to the results in the No. 2 position, where Emilie Haakansson and Kajsa Stegrell fell in a hard-fought match, 6-4.
Down 1-0, the Red Storm looked to rally back when singles play begin, but was quickly halted due to rain, with the restart time coming Sunday around 11:30 a.m. The first match to be decided was on the No. 2 court, where Dawson fell to Anna Roggenburk in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0, to give the Musketeers the advantage, 2-0.
The next decision came on the No. 4 court, where Tenorio fell to Kaitlin Ruether, 6-2 and 6-1, in her final match in a Red Storm uniform, giving Xavier a major 3-0 advantage in the match.
Livianu, who saw her decorated career as a member of the Red Storm come to a close, dropped Kat Lyman on the No. 1 court, 6-3 and 6-4, to bring the Johnnies deficit to 3-1. Livianu goes down as arguably the top player in program history, as she is the only member of the Red Storm to capture three BIG EAST Player of the Year trophies.
The clinching point for Xavier came on the No. 3 court, where after Haakansson took the first set, Imani Graham stormed back to take the final two frames, 6-2 and 6-0, to seal the victory for the Musketeers.
At the time the match ended, both Stegrell and Ordonez were each trailing on the No. 5 and 6 courts, respectively.
The defeat marks the second straight season that the Johnnies fell to Xavier in the semifinals at the BIG EAST Tennis Championships, as they were defeated, 4-3, in 2019.
