St. John’s Falls to Marquette in Season Finale, 15-14

Joe and Mike Madsen score four goals apiece in their final collegiate game
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 30, 2021) – The St. John's lacrosse team fell to Marquette in back and forth battle, 15-14, on Friday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field.
Joe Madsen and Mike Madsen led the St. John's offense, tallying four goals apiece in their final game as members of the Red Storm. Mike Madsen added two assists for a season-high six points. Sophomore Connor Kalmus netted a career-high three goals, all of which came in the second half. Jonathan Huber extended his goal scoring streak with a pair while graduate student Ryan Schaeffer rounded out the scoring with a single marker.
Junior Patrick Ednie dished out a game-high three assists while Thomas Martello added two helpers.
Marquette's offense was led by Devon Cowan, who tallied four goals. Three other Golden Eagles scored twice. Netminder Gabe Stein entered in relief of starter John Hulsman and stopped 17 shots in just over 50 minutes of action.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a two-goal lead in the opening two and a half minutes of play, but their advantage did not last long, as the Red Storm rattled off five goals over the next five minutes to take a 5-2 lead. The teams traded blows to close the quarter and the Johnnies held a 6-3 edge, their largest lead since the season-opener, after 15 minutes. Joe Madsen scored three of those opening-period goals for the Red Storm.
Marquette (4-8, 3-7 BIG EAST) started the second stanza with a goal from Ryan Fazio 37 seconds in and cut the Johnnies' lead to two, but Mike Madsen responded with his second of the afternoon to make it a three-goal game. Connor McClelland scored with 6:32 to go to cut the lead to two, but Mike Madsen answered again, pushing the St. John's advantage back to three, 8-5, with 5:48 remaining in the half.
From there, Marquette embarked on a 4-0 scoring run that spanned halftime, taking its first lead of the game, 9-8, on an Anthony Orsini tally with 8:07 to go in the third quarter. Morgan Macko scored twice on the spurt.
Mike Madsen's fourth marker of the game knotted things up at nine 35 seconds later before Kalmus' first of the day put the Red Storm back in front, 10-9, with 6:05 to go in the third.
The Red Storm and the Golden Eagles traded goals over the next several minutes before Griffin Fleming's first tally of the afternoon made it 12-11 in favor of Marquette with 11:54 to play.
With 10:12 to go, Kalmus tied it back up at 12 off an assist from Huber. Five minutes later following another Fleming goal, Kalmus pulled the Johnnies even again at 13 with his third of the day.
Following three scoreless minutes, Cowan broke the deadlock, firing a shot through the Red Storm defense and giving Marquette a 14-13 lead with 1:25 remaining.
In need of an equalizer, the Johnnies regained possession on a Marquette faceoff violation. Following a timeout, Martello rushed to the front of the net and got off a shot, but it was turned aside by Stein.
After a successful clear, the Golden Eagles extended their lead to two with an empty-net goal before Joe Madsen closed out his colligate career with one final goal, a stunning individual effort, in the closing seconds.
With the loss, the Red Storm closes out the 2021 campaign with a 1-10 record, including an 0-10 mark in BIG EAST play.
