Red Storm Completes Day One of Metropolitan Championships

The Johnnies earned three first-place finishes
NEW YORK, N.Y. (April 9, 2021) – The St. John's track & field team posted three first-place marks and 11 top-three finishes on day one of the 2021 Metropolitan Outdoor Championships on Friday at Icahn Stadium.
Graduate student Olivia Pantale secured the top mark in the javelin with a distance of 40.72 meters while senior Nina D'Amato notched a personal-best throw of 40.64 meters to earn second place.
Freshman Meghan Ladd took first place in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.20 meters. Ladd surpassed her program-best mark of 3.19 meters that she set at the Fordham Invitational on March 20. Gabriella Kelly placed third in the event with a mark of 2.75 meters.
Stephanie Gerland finished first in the 10K race with a time of 37:36.95 as freshman Hannah Huleatt earned a second-place finish with a mark of 40:02.20.
Sophomore Claire Cushing also posted a new personal-best time of 4:48.10 in the 1500 meters to capture second place.
"We placed first or second in every event we were entered in today, so it was a truly dominating performance by our ladies," said Head Coach Jim Hurt. "Congratulations to our Metropolitan Champions Meghan [Ladd], Olivia [Pantale], and Stephanie [Gerland]."
Senior Antonia Frazier finished in second place in the high jump, clearing a mark of 1.50 meters. Therese Gallagher earned a second-place finish in the steeplechase with a time of 11:55.68.
The Red Storm throws squad earned two podium spots in the hammer throw, as Ashley Walsh led the way with a mark of 43.02 meters, good enough for second place. Freshman Ismini Andreou placed third with a distance of 42.14 meters while Amarys Berry finished in fourth with a throw of 41.98 meters.
St. John's returns to action tomorrow at Icahn Stadium for the final day of the Metropolitan Championships. The Johnnies will begin the day with the discus throw at 1 p.m.
The Red Storm's sprints and hurdles squad will begin its events at 2 p.m. with Brooklyn Chestnut, Avon Samuels, Onassha Rogers and Leah Anderson taking part in the 4x100-meter relay. St. John's will close out the meet with the 4x400-meter relay, starting at 3:05 p.m.
